Lei Zhang is one of the earliest players in Kubernetes field. He has been involved in Kubernetes upstream technical work since 2014. In 2015, he became one of the earliest Maintainers of Kubernetes community. In 2016, he was elected as the official AMBASSADOR of CNCF. In the Kubernetes community, Lei zhang was one of the early designers and maintainers of the Kubernetes Container Runtime Interface (CRI) and KataContainers runtime, as well as the main author of several core features of Large particles such as Kubernetes equivalence class scheduling and topology resource management.
After joining Alibaba in 2018, Lei Zhang led the proposal of “Cloud native Application Delivery System” based on Kubernetes. In the same year, lei Zhang was elected co-chair of CNCF application Delivery Field Group with the highest vote. He is the only Chinese co-chair among the seven field groups of CNCF at present. The leading team included Argo and other well-known open source projects in the field of application management into the CNCF incubator, and was recommended as the TOC of the Argo open source community.
At the end of 2019, Lei Zhang led Ali Cloud and Microsoft CTO Office team to jointly put forward the Open source project OAM (Open Application Model), which is the industry’s first standard Model and framework in the field of cloud native Application delivery and management.
November 2020, OAM model Kubernetes implementation KubeVela officially open source, so that the concept of OAM has been further improved. KubeVela is a PaaS kernel that can be arbitrarily extended in a Kubernetes native way, and platform engineers can build any vertical business system based on it. In fact, the current OAM model and its Kubernetes implementation KubeVela project are themselves core components of ali Cloud native application infrastructure, It supports the operation and expansion of the kernel of several Internet-level platforms, including Ali Cloud EDAS service, Ali Group core PaaS, Ali Cloud Edge computing platform and Dharma Yuan AI PaaS.
Solve the “last mile” problem of cloud native
Today, the OAM community has a large number of contributions from over a dozen technology companies and teams, including Oracle, MasterCard, Upbound. IO, Tencent, Bytedance, Fourth Normal Form and Manbang Group. They are not only important technical forces in the OAM community. Many were early originators of the KubeVela project. In the next design, the OAM community will continue to build user-side models for developers based on KubeVela, which has already produced usable platform-layer models, and on this basis, improve application-layer middleware and traffic governance capabilities through Dapr Sidecar and Istio. Achieve the goal of “Make shipping Applications more Enjoyable in the cloud”.
