You’re more than just a developer
You're not just a good developer.
Being a good developer is not your raison d ‘etre. That’s why it’s okay for people to disagree about what the best development tool is.
That’s why it’s okay for you to make a mistake. The only reason to be wrong is because the only reason you exist is to be the perfect developer.
You're not just a developer
You are more than:
- developers
- students
- The teacher
- managers
- An employee or a parent…
You are none of the above. When you define yourself as one or the other, you suffer when your fragile sense of self is challenged. It will often be challenged because the truth is that you are lying to yourself.
If you define yourself as one identity, there is nothing else. For example, to be a good developer, you will suffer. If you only define yourself as ____, you will experience pain.
To quote from This Is Water:
You worship your intelligence, see it as intelligence, and you will eventually feel stupid and a fraud, always on the verge of discovery. – dfw
If you cling to an identity for life, that's what's going to leave you. What you have will be lost.
Who you are has nothing to do with the tools you use or the code you write. I think so. Because you need the freedom to live. Because the alternative is pain.
The alternative is the unconscious, the default setting, the rat race, the constant aching feeling of having and losing, something infinite.
I hope luck will always be with you. 💫
