Li Hongyuan, 42, had no idea that a 300,000-yuan severance payment would result in 251 days in jail.
Li Hongyuan joined Huawei in October 2005 and was dismissed from the company on January 31, 2018. Before his resignation, he worked in the inverter sales management department.
From December 2017 to March 2018, Li hongyuan extorted about 300,000 yuan from huawei by threatening to report the department head for illegal business operations, according to the Decision not to prosecute written by The Longgang District People’s Procuratorate of Shenzhen.
On March 8, 2018, the department head transferred about 300,000 yuan to Li Hongyuan through the personal bank account of the department secretary. The transaction was summarized as “economic compensation for leaving the company”.
Li hongyuan said that the 300,000 yuan payment was “economic compensation for leaving the company” : he had worked for Huawei for 12 years and received 331,776.73 yuan as personal economic compensation for leaving the company through negotiation with the company. After deducting taxes of about 30,000 yuan, about 300,000 yuan was received in the account.
On December 16, 2018, Li Hongyuan was detained by the Shenzhen Public Security Bureau. Li hongyuan said the charge was “suspected duty encroachment”. On December 28, the charge was changed to “suspected extortion” by his former employer, Huawei Technologies Co LTD in Shenzhen, and the evidence was the transfer record of 300,000 yuan from the personal account of the department secretary.
