Zorin OS has long held a place in the beginner’s Linux distribution rankings. True, it may not be the most popular, but it’s certainly one of the best distributions for people switching from the Windows camp to Linux.

I remember a few years ago, a friend of mine kept insisting that I install Zorin OS. Personally, I didn’t like the UI style at the time. However, now that Zorin OS 15 is out, I have even more reason to install it and use it as my daily operating system.

Don’t worry, in this article, I’ll tell you everything you need to know.

New features in Zorin 15

Let’s take a look at some of the major changes in the latest version of Zorin. Zorin 15 is based on Ubuntu 18.04.2, which brings a number of performance improvements. In addition, there are a number of UI (user interface) improvements.

Zorin Connect

One of the main features of Zorin OS 15 is Zorin Connect. If you’re on an Android device, you’ll love this feature. Similar to PushBullet, Zorin Connect will enhance your mobile and desktop experience.

You can sync notifications from your smartphone on your desktop and reply to them at the same time. You can even reply to text messages and view conversations.

In general, you can experience the following features:

  • Share files or links between devices
  • Use your phone as a remote control for your computer
  • Use your phone to control media playback on your computer and automatically stop playback when an incoming call comes in

As stated in their official announcement, data transfer is limited to local networks and no data is uploaded to the cloud server. To experience Zorin Connect, go to Zorin Menu > System Tools > Zorin Connect.

New desktop themes (including night mode!)

I’m a sucker for “night mode”. To me, this is the best feature that comes with Zorin OS 15.

When I enable the dark mode of the interface, my eyes feel so comfortable, don’t you want to try it?

It’s not just a dark theme, but a cleaner, more intuitive UI, with nice new animations. You can find all the relevant Settings in Zorin’s built-in appearance application.

Adaptive background adjustment & Dark light color mode

You can choose to have the desktop background automatically adjust to the ambient brightness at every hour of the day. Also, if you want to avoid eye damage from blue light, you can use night mode.

Application of matters

I’ve always wanted to support this feature so I wouldn’t have to use other Linux client programs to add tasks. Great to see the built-in application integration and support for Google Tasks and Todoist.

How much more?

Yes! Other major changes include support for Flatpak, touch layout for 2-in-1 tablet laptops, DND mode, and some redesigned apps (Settings, Libre Office) to give you a better user experience.

Note: There will be an upgrade pack later this year that will upgrade from Zorin OS 12 to version 15 without needing to be reinstalled.

As a reminder, Zorin OS comes in three versions: the flagship version, the core board, and the lightweight version.

If you want to support developers and projects while unlocking the full functionality of Zorin OS, you can buy the flagship version for $39.

If you just want some basic features, the core version will do (you can download it for free). If that’s the case, like if you have an old computer, then you can use the lighter version.
