The history of Excel

In 1982, Microsoft introduced its first spreadsheet software, Multiplan, which was a great success on CP/M systems, but lost to Lotus1-2-3 on MS-DOS systems. That led to Excel, which was developed under the codename Doug Klunder: Do what Lotus 1-2-3 can do, and do it better. In 1985, the first Excel was created for Mac only. In November 1987, the first Excel for Windows was released (bundled directly with the Windows environment, version 2.0 on the Mac). Lotus 1-3 was slow to adapt for Windows, and by 1988 Excel had outsold Lotus, putting Microsoft in the lead among PC software vendors. Every two years or so since then, Microsoft has released a new version of Excel to further its advantage. The latest version of Excel is currently version 16, also known as Microsoft Office Excel 2016.
