History of SAFe
Launched by Scaled Agile founder Dean Leffingwell at ScaledagileFramework.com in 2011, SAFe has been updated to version 5.0 as of October 2019.

SAFe supports a variety of development environments, with four out-of-the-box configurations. Respectively is:
Essential SAFe configuration
The Essential SAFe configuration is the basic building block of all SAFe configurations and is the simplest starting point for implementation. It provides lean Agile leadership, team and technical agility, and DevOps and on-demand publishing capabilities.
SAFe is based on an organizational structure called Agile Release Training (ART), where Agile teams, key stakeholders, and other resources work on an important, ongoing solution mission.
SAFe configuration for large solutions
The Large Solution SAFe configuration introduces business solutions and lean systems engineering capabilities to support those building the largest, most complex solutions that require multiple agile release trains and vendors but do not require combination-level considerations.
Development of such solutions is common in industries such as aerospace and defense, automotive, and government, where large solutions – rather than portfolio governance – are the primary focus.
Solutions training organizational structures help enterprises address their biggest challenges – building large-scale, multidisciplinary software, hardware, network physics and complex IT systems. Developing these solutions requires additional roles, artifacts, events, and coordination.
Portfolio SAFe configuration
The Portfolio SAFe configuration provides lean Portfolio management capabilities to align Portfolio execution with enterprise strategy. It is organized around a value stream through one or more value streams.
Portfolio SAFe provides business agility through portfolio strategy and investment capital, agile portfolio operations and lean governance principles and practices.
Complete SAFe configuration
The complete SAFe configuration includes all five core competencies of a Lean enterprise. It is the most comprehensive version of the framework, enabling enterprises to build and maintain large and complex solution portfolios.
