At the end of each year, Internet companies have a popular activity called “KPI rush”.
The so-called “KPI rush” is the goal set at the beginning of the year, at the end of the year, but not achieved, so they have to rush to save themselves before the end of the fiscal year (overtime).
Alibaba’s fiscal year ends On March 31. So if you have a friend who works in Alibaba, you must be saying KPI every day these months. It is highly likely that he will start his 907 life for about a month.
Is it so important to meet KPI’s?
Yes.
If the KPIs are badly completed, this year’s year-end bonus will be negatively affected, as well as salary increases and promotions next year.
If the KPI is well completed, the year-end bonus of 6-10 months is not a dream (or even more), and the hope of promotion is also increased.
Why do you have to work overtime?
Since the KPI is set at the beginning of the year, why can’t it be completed as scheduled by the end of the year, and the programmers have to work overtime? Not even 996?
Because kpIs tend to be set too high, you know…
For example, what new platform to build and how many orders to promote, I made a plan at the beginning of the year and only half of it was completed at the end of the year.
So it’s all about overtime.
In addition, the Spring Festival, a traditional Chinese holiday, falls at this time, so most people have to ask for leave, so they have to work overtime before and after the leave.
So, often 996 is not enough, 907 is needed.
I don’t want KPI still can’t?
Some people may say, I don’t want to trade my body for money, it doesn’t matter if I end the year less.
First of all, most people are still relatively poor and desperately want a bigger annual bonus. So there aren’t many people who don’t want a bonus. The management is not afraid to let a few people get upset, so they can fire you before The Spring Festival and make others work more hours.
They dare you to quit your job before the Spring Festival, otherwise you may lose your guaranteed year-end bonus.
Second, even if there are resignations, those resignations can be used as a reason for the project’s failure: some people can’t take the “pressure” of the project and fail. The management of their own management problems can be avoided, perfect blame.
Finally, because everyone’s legal awareness is weak, no one will go to the labor arbitration department to report, so the management department will not intervene.
To sum up, you have to work overtime even without KPI. If you don’t, just leave.
How to deal with it?
No solution. At least that’s what HAPPENED to me when I was at Ali. I put up with it for the money, spending three or four weekends in the company, mostly because I was poor, trying to get my year-end bonus and stock for many months.
This problem is not caused by any one person, but the company’s poor management ability, lack of awareness of the rule of law and many other reasons.
You can collect evidence and report it to arbitration, but you still lose your year-end bonus.
Fortunately alibaba’s monetary compensation is enough, if your company is not even this, it is not worth working for it, quickly improve their skills and quit.
If your company does ask you to work overtime and doesn’t plan to compensate you financially, I have a plan.
First, work overtime as required. This will be a different kind of overtime than usual, in that you will focus on the “wrong demand.” Because you’re a programmer, you can spend your time doing features you shouldn’t be doing, leaving “no time for core features”. If asked, you can say that management forced you to do features you shouldn’t have (trust me, management loves to give programmers useless features to do, and you’ll find them).
Secondly, find the various problems of the management, press not table, useful behind.
Finally, find a way to ensure that the project doesn’t go live on time.
This way, you can look like you worked hard but were let down by management.
If someone in management blames you, tell them all about the management problems you find.
Remember, this technique is too insidious to be used lightly.
conclusion
May you be compensated financially for all your overtime.
To the end.
