Two weeks ago, we releasedTiDB Challenge Season 1In the final announcement, TiDB’s “performance” has been “dramatically” improved by the players’ cool actions over the past 3 months, such as:

  • * Team improved the performance of IN() function by 150+ times IN the first month of the competition, and made the performance of LIKE() function improve exponentially;
  • Tabokie made Titan GC not affected by online write, greatly improving TiKV write performance;
  • Pingyu combines Window operator and Sort operator to hash group together, which improves the performance of Window function beyond expectation.

But after the game, everyone seemed to have a little more to do:

Contestant A: It’s fun to toss TiDB, it’s fun (fan.gif)

Contestant B: Yeah, it needs to get more people to play!

Eat melon masses 1: that must let TiDB better start, better use, play talent will be more.

Let’s take another challenge and make TiDB easy to use so that people can play it quickly and experience the cool product (secretly, I didn’t find a place to start last season, please open up more Repo options in the future!

Contestant C: “Ease of use”, TiDB users feel better, you can ask their pain points.

TiDB Robot: Second.

TiDB Challenge Season 2, come on!

The second season of TiDB Challenge officially kicks off today. The season will last for 3 months and will focus on “improving TiDB usability”. Considering that users have experienced the “ease of use” in TiDB implementation, we solicited the opinions of TiDB User Group (TUG). Finally, we combined the top 20 requirements from the TUG poll with our own ideas for “ease of use” improvements to set up the challenge. It is worth noting that completing the top three requirements in the user vote will give you bonus points! The top three requirements add 10000, 8000 and 6000 points respectively as a whole. When a requirement is fully fulfilled or at the end of the season, credits for that requirement are shared by the sub-task completers of that requirement.

This season, there are still three levels of missions: Easy, Medium and Hard, and each mission has a certain number of points. This time we have optimized the grading system for this season: if you are new to the challenge for the first time, the Easy task can be played directly; Veteran players (with 200 points or more in the Repo history) can go straight to Medium and above!

There will be more tiDB-related Repo missions this season, and you can choose which direction you are good at:

  • TiDB
  • TiKV
  • PD
  • Chaos-Mesh
  • Data Migration
  • Backup&Restore
  • client-rust
  • tidb-dashboard
  • Ongoing update

After the game, the players can use the points to exchange rich prizes, this exchange awards also have a big upgrade! In addition to TiDB limited edition accessories (T-shirts, hoodies, backpacks, office five-piece sets, black and white game console power packs, bookmark calendar sets), there are also one-year licenses for any of the JetBrain Toolbox software, PingCAP annual Conference honors, and even a trip to Silicon Valley with charter wine! In addition, players who complete any one of the missions can also get a “finishing souvenir badge”, which looks like 👇

FAQ

Q1: How to change registration information? How will the credits change after the registration information is changed?

To change the registration information, you need to close the wrong registration Issue and open a new Issue for registration. Editing on the original Issue is not supported. After the change of registration information, there are three changes in points:

  • The increase or decrease of team members will not affect the total team score;
  • The individual points of new members who join the team will be frozen to the status before joining the team, and the points gained after joining the team will be owned by the team;
  • Players who break away from the team and compete as individuals do not inherit team points, which start at 0.

Q2: How do I give up/change a received Issue?

  • Give up Issue: Reply “give-up-challenge” under claimed Issue
  • Change Issue: Perform the operation of “abandon Issue” on the received Issue first, and then select a new Issue

Q3: Can PingCAP internal employees be invited to join a team?

Of course you can! We welcome members of the community to participate with PingCAP staff. PingCAP friends can work on problems with community friends during non-working hours. To ensure fair competition as much as possible, when the proportion of PingCAP’s internal employees in the total team is larger than that of an EXPERIMENTAL team, the team can only choose an Issue of Hard level or above to challenge, and the team will be a star team and will not participate in the final ranking, but will still retain the access to the points.

Q4: What if I can’t remember which Repo did 200 points?

After registration, each participant will receive an automatic reply from sRE-Bot, which contains the current points for each Repo.
