Apache Software Foundation (hereinafter referred to as Apache), the world’s largest open source software foundation, announced on October 24th Beijing time that Apache ServiceComb has graduated as an Apache Top-level project.
ServiceComb was donated by Huawei to Apache in November 2017 and incubated by members of the Incubator management Committee under the guidance of Apache mentors. On September 25th, 10 votes passed the graduation proposal vote in the Apache Incubator. On October 17, Apache’s board of directors approved the graduation of ServiceComb, the industry’s first microservices project to be incubated and graduated as a top-level project at Apache.
Apache Marketing Director Sally Khudairi posted the following official announcement on the Apache Software Foundation channel official account:
The Apache Software Foundation has announced Apache Service Ecomb as a top-level project. An open source micro-service framework applied in qiwa Intelligent Technology, Huawei Cloud, Isoftstone, Chuanzhi Podcast, MACE medical, Pactera, China Insurance, Tongji University and other enterprises and fields.
October 2018, Wakefield, MA — The Apache Software Foundation (ASF), an incubator of over 350 open source projects staffed entirely by volunteer developers, today announced Apache Service Ecomb as a Top-level project (TLP).
Apache ServiceComb is an open source microservices software framework designed to enable developers to efficiently and easily build and manage microservices applications. The project was originally developed at Huawei and donated to the Apache Incubator in November 2017.
Apache ServiceComb director Jiang Ning said:
We are very proud that ServiceComb has reached this important milestone. ServiceComb has grown from a microservices software development suite to a complete microservices solution in less than a year. During the Apache incubation period, the number of ServiceComb users grew rapidly, and new developers continued to come in, which is amazing to see at such a high rate of growth.
Apache ServiceComb, as a one-stop microservices solution, consists of three sub-projects:
Java-Chassis
An out-of-the-box Java language microservices SDK that includes four parts: service contract, programming model, operation model and communication model, as well as a full set of microservices governance capabilities such as load balancing, fault tolerance, flow limiting, and call chain tracing. Microservice governance and business logic are isolated.
Service-Center
Etcd-based, high performance, high availability, stateless, Go language service discovery and registry, providing real-time service instance registration, real-time service instance notification, and inter-service contract testing.
Saga
Provide the ultimate consistency solution for distributed transactions and solve microservice pain points.
Highlights of Apache Service B include:
Asynchronous kernel
Vertx-based synchronous and asynchronous model programming effectively ensures high performance and low latency in both traditional enterprise and e-commerce, as well as in emerging enterprises such as the Internet or the Internet of Things, to avoid an avalanche of applications at peak load.
◆ Out of the box experience
Microservice projects, launched by developers through the scaffolding site start.servicecomb.io, can combine service registration, discovery, communication, and microservice governance capabilities with default centralized configuration.
Mixer OpenAPI
Automatic code generation, isolation of business logic code and governance capabilities, enabling DevOps Pipeline, and two-way generation capabilities using contract files and OpenAPI enable different teams to develop and manage code, test, and document efficiently and independently.
Apache ServiceComb has been used in dozens of enterprises, including Qiwa Intelligent Technology, Huawei Cloud, Isoftstone, Transwisdom Podcasts, Mase Medical, Pactera, PICC and Tongji University.
“In 2015, Huawei Cloud launched microservices-related services, and this is the original code of ServiceComb,” said Liao Zhenqin, general manager of Huawei Cloud PaaS Product Department:
Apache ServiceComb is the core of huawei cloud micro service engine CSE. It is widely used in huawei consumer Cloud, Huawei Cloud Core, Huawei EI and many other major products, and is the de facto standard of Huawei micro services. We are very pleased with the rapid growth of Service B in the Apache Incubator and encourage more engineers to continue to embrace and contribute to open source by becoming part of the Apache Software Foundation volunteer community.
Huawei Consumer Cloud uses Apache ServiceComb’s high-performance, low-latency asynchronous technology to provide more than 1,500 noden-level microservices, supporting 400 million mobile phone users online. With ServiceComb, QPS is increased by 2 times + and latency is reduced by 45%.
“We use Apache ServiceComb to build a drone controlled intelligent brain. ServiceComb is an out-of-the-box microservices solution that provides microservice governance capabilities without any coding, “said Sujian Zhou, chief architect of Qwa Intelligent Technology:
It saves a lot of development resources compared to other RPC frameworks using their own implementations or traditional ones. With ServiceComb, team development and node deployment efficiencies are doubled, which is very exciting. We are also pleased with ServiceComb’s integration with open source distributed tracking systems such as APM, Apache Zipkin, Apache SkyWalking, and Prometheus, which greatly improves our cross-node call chain tracking capabilities, team positioning, and problem solving.
“Since microservices architecture is not a single point of technology issue, we need to respond to rapid changes in technology, organization and processes,” said Yongwei Bao, vice president of product Engineering Center at Isofstone Smart City Technology Co., LTD. :
Apache ServiceComb Java-Chassis does a great job of automatically generating service framework code based entirely on the service contract implementation of OpenAPI at its core. This enabled our team to successfully microservize our smart city business systems. It’s great to see our staff actively participating in the Service Ecomb project and learning about the open development Apache Way with the Apache community. Apache ServiceComb is a star project, and we firmly believe that participating in the Service ecomb community will help improve our software engineer capabilities.
“Apache Service B has a strong and healthy community and a comprehensive technical background. The project’s focus on making it easier for enterprises to microserve and go to the cloud is impressive, “said Yu Yang, director of Chuanzhi Podcast Research Institute.
Based on the consideration of micro-service design, excellent technical practice and perfect community documents, Transwisdom podcast chooses ServiceComb as the teaching material of micro-service technology for education and training.
“Graduating as an Apache top-level project shows that all contributors who join before or during the incubator have a place called Apache ServiceComb,” jiang added:
It is a pleasure to work with volunteers in this open, equal and diverse environment. We welcome new contributors to join ServiceComb in code development, evangelizing micro-services, micro-service innovation, advancing community development under the Apache Way, and any other form.
Usability and monitoring:
The Apache ServiceComb software is released under Apache License V2.0 and is overseen by a team of active contributors who choose to do so themselves. The Project Management Committee (PMC) directs the day-to-day operations of the project, including community development and product launches.
