May 14 – Kyodo News reported that hacker group Darkside posted a statement online claiming to have stolen confidential information from Toshiba Group. GitHub Desktop has a new version 2.8 to improve the difference comparison experience
GitHub just released a new version of GitHub Desktop 2.8, which aims to make working on projects more seamless for developers. First, thanks to improvements to the Difference Comparison (DIFFS) feature, GitHub Desktop 2.8 now has the ability to better understand code changes, hide surrounding white space, and assign new aliases to local repositories.
By contrast, older versions of GitHub Desktop smartly looked at a few lines of code that they or others had changed, leading many developers to complain that it was difficult to fully understand a particular change.
But now, developers can click the “Extensions” button in GitHub Desktop 2.8 to see the rest of the changes around a particular file.
Second, users can clean up the Spaces around code changes. GitHub explains that sometimes not enough contextual information is displayed around changes, resulting in a somewhat large white space.
With this update, developers will be able to click on the pinion icon in the upper right corner of the differences window, and then choose to hide the white space to help you better understand the code changes.

Distributed SQL engine Apache Trafodion has been retired
Apache Trafodion has been officially retired by a vote of its committers.
Apache Trafodion is a Webscale SQL-on-Hadoop solution for Hadoop that supports transactional or operational workloads on Hadoop. Trafodion builds on Hadoop’s scalability, resilience and flexibility to provide guaranteed transactional integrity that enables new big data applications to run on Hadoop. In February 2018, Apache Trafodion became Apache’s top project.
However, due to the inactivity of the project, Apache Trafodion moved into the Attic in April 2021 and officially retired on May 14 of this year. Decommissioning an Apache project does not directly shut down everything, as existing users need to both know about the project and retain access to the information necessary for their development work. As a result, the user mailing list will remain open, while the rest of the project’s resources, including the website, wikis, SVN, downloads, and bug trackers, will continue to be available in a read-only state, with the same URL.
Microsoft introduced threat and vulnerability management capabilities to Linux
Microsoft is bringing its own security software, Defender, to MacOS in 2019. Microsoft has announced that Defender’s Threat and Vulnerability Management (TVM) features are now available on Linux and MacOS.
According to Microsoft, TVM allows users to review recently discovered vulnerabilities in applications and potential misconfigurations of systems, and to remedy any affected managed and unmanaged devices.
It is currently available in Public Preview and supports MacOS, RHEL, CentOS, and Ubuntu, with Oracle Linux, SUSE, and Debian to be added soon.

Microsoft has announced a new open source project, EBPF for Windows
Microsoft has released a new open source project, EBPF for Windows, to enable EBPF to work on Windows 10 and Windows Server 2016 and later.
EBPF is a new design introduced in Kernel 3.15, which develops the original BPF into a “kernel virtual machine” with more complex instruction set and wider application range. It supports the injection of a small piece of “kernel code” written in C language into the kernel in user mode, so as to provide more programmability, extensibility and agility. In order to prevent the injected code from causing the kernel to crash, EBPF will strictly check the injected code and reject the injection of unqualified code.
According to Microsoft, EBPF for Windows utilizes several existing EBPF open source projects, including Iovisor UBPF and PREVAiler, but is not a branch of EBPF. The project aims to allow developers to develop EBPF programs on top of existing versions of Windows using the familiar EBPF tool chain and application programming interface (API), and to allow EBPF programs to run in kernel mode or as a user-mode protected service. The project is currently hosted on a GitHub repository.
