Why practice listening first

English listening has always been my weakness, I think it should also be the weakness of most Chinese. At the same time, students with poor hearing will not be able to speak English standard (because they do not know the exact pronunciation, so they do not know what the word is). As my top goal in 19 years, English is more important than any front-end technology learning. Listening, speaking, reading, writing, listening as the first language is naturally the part I strive to conquer.

This article mainly shares how I practice listening, and how to combine technology with English to learn English more effectively. The methodology is biased towards long-term practice, aimed at the acquisition of a second language in one’s spare time.

As to why I will be listening as my first step, rather than speaking and writing, etc., before watching the microblog character of demon dads paid a knowledge sharing, the baby was mentioned in enlightenment stage, without any methodology, was a complete immersion (input), then simulated the pronunciation, hear the words, the beginning of the To the late sentence, and then to the last initiative speech (output). After the listening and speaking stage, it is natural to read. Children will try to recognize words and then match them with their own language system to form a mapping of pronunciation and words. At this time, language really belongs to the brain and forms a rapid conditioned reflex.

Therefore, in the adult stage, I took listening as the first step, according to the order of listening, speaking, reading and writing for systematic learning.

Learn normal pronunciation first

There’s a Github repo dedicated to technical words that programmers mispronounce, including some front-end pronunciators like ajax Module Safari. When most programmers see a word they can’t pronounce, their first reaction is not to look up the pronunciation rules in the dictionary, but to adopt the common pronunciation handed down from ear to ear. For example, ajax is a word that many backend gurus pronounce as Ajax. For example, module is a word that many people confuse with model and pronounce as Moudu. Although we are used to it and understand it, are we really going to be able to respond to ajax when we hear it in an English-speaking technical exchange?

First, take some time to figure out how to pronounce all the syllables

I spent 2 weeks following the lai Shixiong American phonetics _ Baidu Encyclopaedic, will all vowel and consonant pronunciation practice again, when read through the first time you will find that once familiar with many of the sound is wrong. When you know how all the sounds are made, you don’t get a headache when you look at the symbols for words, like the Ajax ones.

Start listening carefully

We usually recite the words, remember the words when reading the article will quickly respond, but when the word appears in listening, it is likely to not respond, that is because we did not convert the word into “listening” words. And how to change with the help of fine listening.

How to conduct fine listening training? I recommend the shadow following reading method described in zhihu Explosion article. I have been practicing this method intermittently for two months, and I feel a sense of achievement when I find my dictation ability more and more accurate.

However, after listening carefully, we found that some rules of conjunctions, reduction and reduction are really weird. Listening carefully will produce a great sense of frustration. We also have to learn some common rules of fast pronunciation. I recommend the famous course “Daily Dictation” on YouTube. The lecturer is “Coach Shane”, a foreign teacher living in South Korea.

The first 200 of the hundreds of videos are enough to cover most of the fast pronunciation rules, such as consonant linking, H (Her his he.. Schwa, NSL forte will swallow schwa dt and other fast pronunciation rules.

After 200 sessions, these rules have become clear to you. If you use the shadow and reading method for intensive reading training, you will be familiar with some confusing things. Even if you can’t hear them, you will know why in the review section. It turns out there are rules for such strange pronunciation.

The next thing to do is to continue to listen, less is more, each time less, most of us programmers 996 can not spare a large chunk of time, every day 20 minutes for listening, another 20 minutes for reviewing the original text and adding new words to the list to review.

As time goes on, the amount of 20-minute dictation continues to increase, from the first few sentences to the later paragraphs, within a few months.

Review list

After listening to the review, be sure to not hear the words to repeat the review of the software, the use of software to help you review.

You can use Anki, but I don’t find it very convenient on mobile.

I use ink and ink to memorize words. After recording the words, I will review them along with the memory curve.

Summarize the learning path of listening stage:

1. It takes about 3 months to learn daily dictation, with two videos per day, in order to understand the rules of fast pronunciation

2. Find materials for intensive reading training in accordance with the shadow follow reading method. I chose IELTS as the intensive listening material because OF cet-6.

Keep practicing.

Start experimenting with pan-listening

Fine listening for a long time, will find that the success rate of sentence by sentence up, but once you let go of listening will be easy to get the meaning of the sentence, the brain processor can not deal with the content quickly entered.

Therefore, appropriate pan-listening and appropriate training of response ability.

Ielts is used as the material for intensive listening. Considering that ielts vocabulary sentence patterns are more professional and suitable for in-depth learning, while extensive listening is mainly to train reaction ability, I adopted materials from two websites related to front-end technology.

  • frontendmasters.com
  • egghead.io

The lecturers of these two websites are all industry giants, and fully oriented to native language learners, often speed, and for front-end development, that is, you can practice listening response, and can learn by the way, two birds with one stone beautiful! But the two websites are charged, but experienced fine listening training with a certain listening foundation, I think there will be motivation to spend hundreds of oceans to open a member…

For example, I recently took a typescript tutorial as a general listening material to get familiar with typescript usage scenarios and syntax. After reading it, I rewrote a jsonTocanvas jsSdk that I had written in my company into TS. I’m familiar with ts vocabulary, such as Enums tuple generic Function overloading constraint, and now I’m familiar with hearing those words, or seeing them, or even describing typescript in English. Two birds with one stone are beautiful

conclusion

From the beginning of the session by this point in time in April 19 years after practice hearing is about half a year, half year gone, of course, a lot of detours, from the start, open the two ears at the front end of the youtube video, now can understand probably talking about what, and some which can be reflected exactly is extremely fast sentences consisting of a few words, It’s impossible to measure, but at least it gives me a glimpse of a gradual path.
