Summary of problem C

A problem in the field of data insights, mainly image data, time-stamped text, numerical values, geographical location data, data is not large, but many types, data processing cleaning and mining requirements are not low.

The problem background

In September 2019, the nest of the Asian bumblebee (an invasive alien species) was discovered on Vancouver Island in British Columbia, Canada. The nest was quickly destroyed, but news of the incident spread quickly throughout the region. Since then, there have been several confirmed sightings of pests in neighboring Washington state, as well as a number of false sightings. Map of clearance and detection, bumblebee surveillance and public sightings, as shown in the figure (from the original topic mainly detection of Asian bumblebee, and the location of bumblebee surveillance and public sites)

Balabala, the Asian bumblebee, is known for its main habits:

  • Invasive alien species, harmful to local bee species and other insects;
  • Its life cycle is similar to that of other honeybees, with queens leaving the hive in the fall and setting up within 30 kilometers of the meta-hive in the spring.
  • Reports from the public may or may not be true about the Asian hornet, and the resources available to the government are limited.

Problems that need to be solved

  • Discuss modeling the spread of the pest over time and determine its predictability and accuracy; (Species dispersal model: logistic regression etc.)
  • Most reported sightings mistake other wasps for Vespa Mandarinia, using only the data set files provided by the title and (possibly) the image files provided to create, analyze and discuss a model for predicting misclassified bumblebees; (Building classification machine learning model)
  • Use your model to discuss problem solving: Categorizing reports on how to prioritize the most likely positive sightings (Building a categorical machine learning model)
  • Explains how to update your model with additional new reports over a period of time and how often you should update it.
  • Using your model, determine what evidence is there that this pest has been eliminated in Washington state?

The final results report is a two-page memo summarizing the findings of the study for the Washington State Department of Agriculture.

Relevant data sets and data

  • Background information from the Penn State University extension describing the insect;
  • XLSX (time-stamped text, numeric, geolocation data)
