Ted Kremenek, head of Apple’s Swift project, announced on the Swift-Evolution public mailing list that the Swift 4 phase has been discontinued and will now move on to Swift 5 planning and development. Kremenek listed the current plans and concerns for Swift 5 on Swift Evolution’s GitHub repository, focusing on improving ABI stability.
Kremenek said, “ABI stability is an important inflection point for the maturity of the language, And it cannot be delayed any longer.” ABI stability is one of the most important factors in determining language maturity and cannot be delayed any longer.
The team also posted an ABI Stability Manifesto on GitHub, which you can read.
It won’t be long before Swift developers start learning a new language again…
