Manually reset Windows Update components

Major Follow the steps in this section carefully. Improper modifications to the registry can cause serious problems. Before modifying, back up the registry for restoration in case of problems.

To reset the Windows Update component, follow these steps:

  1. Open a command prompt. To do this, take any of the following steps depending on your Version of Windows: 1.Windows 8.1 and Windows 8: In the Start screen, slide in from the right edge of the screen to display the super button, select Search, and then search CMD. (Or, if you are using a keyboard or menu, type CMD in the Start screen.) In the search results, hold down or right-click Command Prompt, and choose Run as Administrator. 2.Windows 7 and earlier: Press the Windows logo key + R, type CMD in the Run box, and then press Enter. Right-click CMD and choose Run as Administrator from the shortcut menu.

  2. Stop the BITS service, Windows Update service, and encryption service. To do this, type the following command at the command prompt. Make sure you press Enter after typing each command. 1.net stop bits 2.net stop wuauserv 3.net stop server 4.net stop cryptsvc

  3. Delete the QMGR *.dat file. To do this, type the following command at the command prompt and then press ENTER: Del “%ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Application Data\Microsoft\Network\Downloader\ QMGR *.dat”

  4. If you are following the steps in this article for the first time to try to fix Windows Update, you can skip from Step 4 to Step 5. Perform Step 4 only if you cannot resolve the Windows Update issue after following all the steps except Step 4.
