What is the QGIS

QGIS is an open source GIS (Geographic Information System) software, which was born in May 2002 and is now a very mature open source software. Support Unix platform, Windows, and macOS, based on GPS open source protocol. Interface with C++, QT development.

The purpose of QGIS is to provide a more user-friendly GIS software, which provides the functions commonly used in GIS.

The installation process

First, we can download the latest version of the software from the QGIS website

QGIS’s official website is www.qgis.org/en/site/

QGIS official website download page: www.qgis.org/en/site/for…

There are two installation options available: Network Installer and Standalone Installer

Network installation requires a small number of files to be downloaded, but some additional files need to be downloaded during the installation. Independent installation requires a large number of files to be downloaded, so no files need to be downloaded during the installation. Here we choose the standalone version

Double-click the downloaded EXE file:

Click Next.

Click on [I Agree]

Select the path you want to install and click Next.

Select the component to install. QGIS is checked by default. The accompanying map can also be downloaded for testing. Finally, click “Install” to start the installation.

After the installation is complete, you can restart it immediately or later

After the installation, a folder will appear on the desktop

Inside are the executable files

For the first time to use

The interface of QGIS is shown as follows:

Click the New button to create a new edit area:

A blank edit area

Download the map file from the Internet and put it locally

In the resource browser on the left, locate the downloaded file and double-click to open it. In the Layers view, a layer “China” appears, and the layer information is displayed in the edit area on the right.

With this simple operation, we have created an edit template for the Map of China.

Change the map color:

Open the layer’s right-click menu and select Properties.

Change the Color to the Color you want, and then click “Apply” or “OK”.

The map becomes the color you want.

A new layer

Adding layers is the actual work we need to do.

Click the Layer Add button:

Let’s create a new layer for Chinese tourist hotspots, select “Multipoint” and select “OK” :

In the layer area, a new layer will be added:

New layers are not editable by default, so to enable Edit mode, you must right-click and select Toggle Edit.

Make the layer editable. Now there are more buttons to add dots, click this button.

You can add points to the map.

When adding points, we can use the mouse wheel to enlarge the map, so that we can easily see where to dot.

By clicking the hand-shaped button, we can switch the mouse to drag view mode.

After adding the points, we can right click and select [Open Properties Table] to see the points we have added.

We add columns with one click, add more properties to the hotspot.

If the dot is in the wrong place, you can also click the edit button. Move the point.
