Today we announce the official release of the completely rewritten CodeIgniter 4.0! Many thanks to all of you who contributed code, wrote documentation or submitted an Issue. When you look at most OF the PHP frameworks out there, you’ll see that most of them have some form of commercial support, but for the CodeIgniter framework, it’s the ordinary open source contributors who have helped the framework evolve, even in the face of some challenges.

Looking back, I submitted the code for the first time on August 26, 2015. At the time, I volunteered some code as a hobby. I never thought I would be the lead developer on the project, but due to time constraints from other team members, I took the position that seemed easy. For the first three years or so, I was writing code in my spare time, trying to fulfill my promise. There were times over the years when I wanted to stop, when I wanted to develop something more achievable, like any of the four main ideas I wanted to explore, and you kept me going.

Over the past year and a half, many of you have stepped forward to help bring this project to its conclusion. To this day, it would not have happened without your help.

Unfortunately, all is not rosy, as we recently lost our excellent program leader, James Perry, to lung cancer. His outstanding contributions have made this release of version 4.0 possible. It’s his birthday today. Happy birthday James!

All repositories should be updated in Packagist. If you find any problems, please let me know and we will solve them as soon as possible.

Thank you again! This is a 100% open source contributor driven project, and we have successfully come to the end of the road today, but it is far from over, we can go much further, but now we have laid a solid foundation for the future.
