On June 1, at the Database OceanBase3.0 Summit, OceanBase, a distributed database independently developed by Ant Group, systematically expounded its future development strategy from three dimensions of technology, business and ecology for the first time. At the same time, OceanBase announced the official open source and established the OceanBase open Source community. The official website of the community was launched simultaneously, and 3 million lines of core code were opened to the community.

Focus on core distributed transformation in the next three years

Yang Bing, CEO of OceanBase, said that OceanBase will continue to adhere to the road of self-development and opening-up, and focus on the core distributed transformation in the next three years. At the same time, announced the release of science and technology dividend, the launch of a new price system in July, the public cloud version will launch a lower price separation version of storage and computation.

With the latest release of version 3.0, OceanBase has been upgraded to an enterprise-class distributed database with HTAP mixed load, with high performance capabilities in both transaction processing and data analysis tasks. Compared to the past, transaction processing performance increased by 50%, data analysis performance increased by 10 times. In the future, no matter the user business is transactional or analytical, as long as a set of systems can cope with the “massive, real-time and online” business requirements in the process of digital transformation.

According to Gartner, HTAP (Hybrid transaction/analytic processing) databases will become an important trend in the database space, and an integrated data platform will accelerate the digital transformation.

In the process of deepening digital transformation in various fields, the distributed transformation of core system is a very key link. Cooperation cases in the past year show that with the gradual maturity of independently developed distributed technology, continuous application, optimization and improvement, OceanBase has more and more obvious advantages in reliability, scalability and other aspects when assisting customers in the digital transformation of core systems.

Yang Bing revealed, “On the basis of the current scale and technology dividend, we hope to give customers stronger database capability to carry out distributed transformation of core systems at lower prices and thresholds. Core system transformation can not only enable enterprises to achieve complete autonomy of the whole system. To support business agility without compromising business stability and continuity, and ultimately achieve cost per transaction/account reduction.”

Open source 3 million lines of core code

On the scene of the conference, CEO Yang Bing also announced that the self-developed database OceanBase was officially open source, and the establishment of OceanBase open source community, and the official website of the community was launched simultaneously.

It is understood that open source has risen as an important technology strategy for OceanBase. Yang Zhenkun, founder of OceanBase database, said that OceanBase is committed to creating enterprise-level open source database, and at the same time, working closely with partners to quickly issue commercial versions to meet industry customers’ business demands for high performance, high reliability and converged processing of database.

Developers can use the OceanBase database kernel fully in the open source community. This Open source uses the industry common Open Core model. The open source scope includes database kernel, distributed components and interface drivers, and provides a complete SQL engine, transaction engine and storage engine, supporting multi-copy, distributed transaction, high performance, scalability, fault recovery, optimizer, multi-active DISASTER recovery, syntax compatibility and other core technologies, open source 3 million lines of core code.

OceanBase uses the Magnolia public protocol Mulanpub-2.0, which allows all community participants to modify, use, and reference the code freely. The OceanBase community also formed a technical committee and welcomed all developers to contribute code and documentation.

“More and more excellent products are joining the open source community, which is conducive to the construction of open source ecology and the cultivation of open source talents in China.” Zhou Minghui, a computer science professor at Peking University and the main sponsor of Mulan’s open source license, said China has benefited a lot from the open source community. Now that we have more capacity, we can take a little more responsibility to make the open source community and the world a better place.

“We hope more contributors will join us to build an enterprise-level open source database community that can integrate diverse technology architectures. The OceanBase open Source edition will evolve with the commercial edition, and we are ready to work with developers and partners around the world to evolve rich data processing products that will help the community thrive.”

It is reported that OceanBase is a distributed database independently developed by Ant. It has experienced the super large-scale business scenario of Alibaba, the financial level scenario of Alipay and the Double 11 campaigns, and began to export in 2017. At present, the product has been applied in many institutions, including Industrial and Commercial Bank of China, Shandong Mobile, Fujian Mobile, Digital Jiangxi, Sinopec, China Property Insurance, PICC Health insurance, Zheshang Securities, Bank of Tianjin, Bank of Xi ‘an, Changshu Rural Commercial Bank, Dongguan Bank, etc.

After 11 years of development, OceanBase has become the world’s leading database product. Consecutive transaction Processing Task (TPC-C) benchmark world records were set in 2019 and 2020.
