Facebook, the granddaddy of News streaming, split its News Feed into two parts.

Facebook is testing splitting its News Feed into business content and personal information, a move that could increase advertising spending for some businesses, Reuters reported on Oct. 24.

The test will take place in Six countries — Bolivia, Cambodia, Guatemala, Serbia, Slovakia and Sri Lanka — and is expected to last several months, according to a Facebook statement. Local users will have two feeds, one dedicated to friends and family, and one dedicated to other pages they like.

Adam Mosseri, Facebook’s executive in charge of News Feed, said in a blog post that the company has no immediate plans to test a News Feed split with its 2 billion users worldwide and that it has no plans to force companies to pay “all content distribution costs.”

A split would increase advertising spending

The News Feed has been viewed by Zuckerberg as one of Facebook’s biggest and most successful bets of the past decade. The feature allows users to continuously post social network content, including photos of friends, updates from family members, advertising content, celebrity news and other content that users follow and like.

This feature has not only changed the way news is distributed in Europe and the United States, but also created a new model for social media to make money and even cultivated the habits of online news consumption.

This time, Facebook is splitting its News Feed into two parts, meaning users will see less of its News links. Some marketers who “run” content on Facebook’s home page must pay Facebook a fee if they want to push their content into their personal feeds.

According to Slovakian journalist Filip Struharik, writing on Medium, Facebook’s new feature is already affecting traffic to small media sites in its beta phase. These publishers must pay more for advertising if they want to appear on the News Feed.

Previously, Wall Street analyst Youssef Squali said Facebook could give advertisers more control over where their ads are placed through features like News Feeds. In the long run, this increases the intensity of bidding and the price of each AD.

The split feature is another tool in the fight against fake news

News has always been a thorny issue for Facebook. Facebook has been widely criticized recently for the spread of fake news.

Alex Stamos, Facebook’s head of information security, said earlier this month that the problem with fake news on the platform was more complex than many people thought.

Facebook has been doing this since August, he said, and some topic articles will require fact checking and opinion supplements. On the technology side, Facebook will use “upgraded machine learning” to find more fake news and provide it to third parties for verification.

The separation of the News Feed will greatly reduce the spread of fake News and eliminate fake News at its source as advertisers are subject to payment restrictions.
