See here, you can’t wait to join the big bull under the door?

How can I become a student of Zhou Zhihua?

OK, speaking of worshiping God Zhou as a teacher, LAMDA has to be mentioned here.

LAMDA is affiliated to the State Key Laboratory of New Computer Software Technology and the Department of Computer Science and Technology, Nanjing University. The director is Professor Zhou Zhihua.

“LAMDA” means “Learning And Mining from DatA”. LAMDA’s main research interests include machine learning, data mining, pattern recognition, information retrieval, evolutionary computing, neural computing, and other related areas. The main research contents include: Integrated learning, supervision and active learning, many examples and multiple tags, price sensitive and categories imbalances, measurement, dimension reduction and feature selection, learning and clustering structure, the basic theory of evolutionary computation, enhance the understandability, content-based image retrieval, Web search and mining, face recognition, computer-aided medical diagnosis, bioinformatics, etc.

In the “Nanjing University LAMDA (Zhou Zhihua) group strength? This problem, the highest ranked zhihu user @ Bryan ‘(https://www.zhihu.com/people/zhang-chen-lin-85) said that in the aspect of machine learning, lambda is supposed to be one of the best two Lab in domestic, the other is on THU. The other answers are all praise, which shows its strength.

If you want to enter LAMDA and become a student of Mr. Zhou Zhihua, it is a pity that the deadline for submitting application materials every year is May, while the interview is in June. That is to say, this year’s time window has already passed.

However, if you are interested in pursuing a degree in the Department of Computer Science and Technology at Nanjing University, and would like to choose Zhou Zhihua as your supervisor during the degree, then zhou zhihua’s 7 do’s and don ‘ts may be worth reading:

1. Please consider carefully before contacting me:

  • Are you interested in my current research direction (please refer to my recent papers and my research group homepage)? Research work can be fraught with frustration and can be painful without a high level of interest.

  • Do you have a big financial burden? It is almost impossible for ordinary people to devote themselves to research while worrying about making a living. Therefore, if you have a large financial burden, joining my study group may not be a good choice.

2. If you are planning to apply for a master’s or doctoral degree, I may need to examine you in more depth than if you are only applying for a master’s degree. As a general rule, I recommend you apply for a master’s degree first, and if you still want me to be your supervisor for a doctoral degree after working with me for a period of time (one to two years), then you can submit your doctoral application again. Studying for a PhD under my supervision usually implies that you wish to pursue an academic career, and I recommend that you make such a big decision after you have some understanding of your academic career and the research work you will be doing with me.

3. Excellent undergraduate performance (especially in mathematics courses) will have a good influence on my choice of future master’s students. Generally speaking, you should have a good foundation in mathematics, good programming ability (MATLAB, JAVA, C/C++), good English (able to read professional literature without too much difficulty); In addition, you’d better be optimistic, cheerful, proactive, indomitable perseverance, clear thinking, strong logic, with good expression ability. However, the above requirements are not absolute. In fact, the most important thing is that I think you have good research potential (unfortunately, IT is difficult for me to give a specific description of this).

4. Research background and plasticity will play a decisive role in my choice of future doctoral students. Generally speaking, it is better for you to have participated in cutting-edge research work, have a deep understanding of a research content, have a good publication record, be able to write English papers fluently, be able to give research reports freely, and have a clear understanding of the research work you may be engaged in under my guidance.

5. I suggest you contact me a year in advance. For example, if you plan to enroll in fall 2016, you should probably enroll in May-June 2015 (see here for specific dates; Please refer to the specific application process here)

  • First, you need to Email: 1) resume and 2) statement of research motivation. Please clearly state your personal information, learning experience (scanned undergraduate transcript is required for master applicants), work experience, research experience, published papers and other information that you think will help me to know you better. In the research motivation statement, please use one A4 page to describe your research motivation. (Please note: it is better to send a Chinese PDF file.)

  • If your materials interest me, I will Email you to set up an interview with you (all students who are eventually accepted will be interviewed). If you are out of town, perhaps you can arrange an interview when I attend an academic conference. It is recommended that you conduct the interview in a normal manner and not deliberately prepare for the interview. After the interview, your acceptance into my research group does not mean success, and vice versa is not failure, it is just that we help you judge whether you are suitable for my research group and whether my research group is suitable for you based on previous experience. If you follow the right track, you are more likely to maximize your talents. If you force yourself onto the wrong track, you may do more harm than good for your future.

  • Please note that even if I express my willingness to accept you after the interview, you still need to pass the normal Graduate Entrance examination to gain admission to the Department of Computer Science and Technology at Nanjing University for a PhD/master’s degree (or be recommended for admission).

  • In recent years, there have been a number of unsuccessful applicants who have been interviewed (e.g., failed in the postgraduate entrance examination). In such cases, my research group may recruit additional students in March and April of the following year. If you missed the may-June deadline, you can submit your application at this time, and the application process is the same as above.

6, if you know my relatives or colleagues, I suggest you do not contact me through them, it will have a bad effect on you. The best way is to contact me directly.

7. The best way for you to get in touch with me is by Email. Usually I will reply to you within 2 or 3 days (there may be some delays on business trips). In addition, I do not want you to barge into my office without an appointment, as this would make it difficult for me to conduct research.

P.S. How great the students are
