This tutorial teaches you how to turn off macOS update notifications so you don’t get stuck with them constantly.
If an update is available for your Mac, you will automatically be notified on the screen. There are many reasons why you might not want to update now. For example, because you have an important presentation and desperately need your Mac. Or because you’re on vacation, you don’t have trouble when things get tough. However, you will be constantly reminded that the update is ready. You can also turn this feature off.
Automatically installs Mac updates
If you want to update your Mac and don’t always see reminders, you can choose to automatically install macOS updates. Here’s how you set it up:
1. Choose > System Preferences.
2. Select Software update.
3. Make sure the auto Update My Mac option is checked.
Your computer will now automatically download and install the available updates. You don’t have to do anything yourself and you will receive all important security updates. Of course, this doesn’t solve the problem mentioned above that you’re afraid to update yet. However, if you find it annoying to “lose” your Mac for a long time because you are installing an update, then being ignored during an overnight update will be one less thing to worry about.
Do not download and install automatic macOS updates
Of course, you can choose not to install the macOS update. This can be useful, for example, if you’re on vacation and coming home in a week. If there are problems with the update process, you don’t want problems. Or, maybe your hotel’s wifi is too slow to update at all. In this case, you can choose not to update for now and turn off notifications.
1. Choose > System Preferences.
2. Select Software update.
3. Click Advanced.
4. Uncheck all boxes so that nothing happens automatically. All you need to do is uncheck the first check box, and all other check marks will be automatically unchecked.
Please note that you may also miss important security updates now. Therefore, we recommend leaving the checked state of the last system file and security update box. In addition, you now have to have the discipline to manually check that updates are ready several times a month.
