A production system is a broader system of rules, related to and distinct from predicate logic. Most early expert systems are based on generative systems. Production knowledge representation is one of the common knowledge representation methods. It is expressed in the form of “if-then”, namely production rules, according to the massive causal relationships among various knowledge in human brain memory mode. This form of rule captures the behavioral characteristics of human problem-solving and solves problems through a cognition-action cycle. One generation is that the system consists of three basic parts: rule base, comprehensive database and control mechanism.
The rules in predicate logic are similar to the basic form of the production; in fact, entailment is only a special case of the production. The representation of production rules has obvious advantages, such as good nature, easy modular management, effective representation of knowledge, clear representation of knowledge and so on. However, production rules also have disadvantages such as low efficiency and inability to express structured knowledge. Therefore, it is often combined with other knowledge representation methods, such as frame representation, semantic network representation.
