JavaScript’s 22nd birthday. On December 4, 1995, Netscape teamed up with Sun to release the scripting language JavaScript, announcing that it would complement Java for manipulating web pages. That week, Ruby also released its first version.

Back in the days when most users were using modems to access the Internet, you’d fill out a form and click submit, and then you’d have to wait for dozens of seconds, and then the server would tell you that you had filled in something wrong… It was definitely exciting to do some basic validation on the client side. Netscape, then at the forefront of technological innovation, decided to develop a client-side language to handle this simple authentication. Brendan Edge, then working for Netscape, began planning for LiveScript, released in February 1995, to be used in both browsers and servers.

To meet LiveScript’s release date, Netscape formed a development alliance with Sun. At the same time, Netscape, riding the wave of media hype surrounding Java, temporarily changed the name of LiveScript to JavaScript, so JavaScript is essentially unrelated to Java.

Netscape and Sun are gone today, but JS lives on, and its parents probably had no idea that JavaScript would become the world’s most popular scripting language. By the way, the JavaScript trademark is registered by Oracle.

Ladies and gentlemen, when did you first encounter JavaScript? Is the first line of code alert(‘Hello JavaScript! ‘); ?
