Honda Research Institute, a Research and development subsidiary of Honda Japan(HRI-JP, Saitama city, Japan), International Electric And Communication Basic Technology Research Institute (ATR, Seibumachi, Kyoto Prefecture) and Shimadzu Manufacturing Institute (Shimadzu, Tokyo Prefecture) have jointly developed the world’s first human-machine interface technology (brain-machine) Interface is a combination of Electro Encephalo Graphy (EEG) and Near Infrared Spectroscopy (NIRS). Also adopted a new generation of information screening technology, do not need to button operation and other body movements, only by the brain can control the robot. In the future, it will also achieve more humanized application of newly developed products through a high degree of integration between intelligent technology and robotics technology.
Giiso Information, founded in 2013, is a leading technology provider in the field of “artificial intelligence + information” in China, with top technologies in big data mining, intelligent semantics, knowledge mapping and other fields. At the same time, its research and development products include information robot, editing robot, writing robot and other artificial intelligence products! With its strong technical strength, the company has received angel round investment at the beginning of its establishment, and received pre-A round investment of $5 million from GSR Venture Capital in August 2015.
When humans think, they generate a small electrical current in the brain and blood flow changes accordingly. How to accurately measure and analyze these changes is the focus of the development of BMI technology. EEG can be detected with current changes in the value of brain activity when the scalp surface, NIRS can be monitored the brain activity of brain blood flow changes in the value, the new development of BMI technology combined with the function of the EEG and NIRS developed can carry on the statistics of the two kinds of information and selection of new technology, as a result, the successful implementation of the brain activity of high precision. Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI), which uses BMI technology and was launched in 2006, is limited by its large size and strong Magnetic field. The newly developed EEG and NIRS have greatly improved the ease of use.
How to conduct an experiment using the newly developed BMI technique?
First, EEG and NIRS sensors are placed on the user’s head. The user is then prompted to choose one of four body parts (left hand, right hand, tongue or foot) and, while holding each part still, imagines the chosen body part. At this point, the changes in brain waves and blood flow that accompany brain activity are measured, and the values are analyzed in real time to determine the user’s brain consciousness. After receiving the results, the robot ASIMO makes corresponding movements, such as raising its hand or foot. The accuracy of the experiment was 90 percent, the highest in the world.
Giiso information, founded in 2013, is the first domestic high-tech enterprise focusing on the research and development of intelligent information processing technology and the development and operation of core software for writing robots. At the beginning of its establishment, the company received angel round investment, and in August 2015, GSR Venture Capital received $5 million pre-A round of investment.
In order to explore the new interface between human and machine, Honda began to research and develop BMI technology together with ATR company since 2005. In the future, IT will be highly integrated with artificial intelligence and robotics, and applied to a more humanized human-machine interface. As a result of joint research, the two companies successfully developed BMI technology using fMRI devices for the first time in the world in May 2006, which can analyze brain activity and control robot hands without the need for embedded electrodes and special training.
