While Apple didn’t mention iOS 14’s support for changing default apps at WWDC, there were plenty of people on the official website who did. All of a sudden, many people who have long wanted to switch from Safari are expecting it to be available on their browsers soon.
There are a lot of browsers and email apps that have adapted this feature, but what about their actual experience? Read along with this article.

** Replaces the default browser **
If you want to replace the default Safari browser, you’ll need to download an app that lets you replace it with the default browser. Go to system Settings and find the app Settings. Then you’ll see “Default Browser” Settings. If you have multiple browsers that support replacement, this can be done in any browser Settings.
Setting the Default app
**** Actual experience how
After the replacement, almost all browser-related operations in the system will be taken over by the new app. Whether you open the link or select “Open in Safari” in another app, you’ll be redirected to the app you just set up.
Support to jump from other apps
But that doesn’t mean you can delete Safari or leave it altogether. Since Safari itself cannot be deleted, the best we can do is hide it in the App repository.
In addition, Safari View Controller will be called in many applications to achieve “seamless web hopping” and will not be available in some applications. Some apps stick with Safari View Controller instead of jumping to the default browser. Of course, if you click on the Safari icon at the bottom, it will still open your default browser.
If you have an app with ad-blocking classes installed, they will only work in Safari. If you want to block ads in third-party browsers, you can only hope that the developer has built in AD blocking. Therefore, if you change the default browser, you will most likely disable the ad-blocking app.
Content blockers are only valid for Safari
In short, while iOS 14 allows you to replace the default browser, Safari is the foundation for some of the system’s features and will still show up in your daily use. In terms of actual experience, iOS 14’s default browser replacement works fine and doesn’t have any major usage issues.
**** these applications support replacement
Although the system supports replacing the default browser, the third-party APP also needs to take the initiative to adapt, otherwise we still cannot replace it. Alook and Quark, for example, both have their merits, but you can’t use them as your default browser because the app itself isn’t currently adapted.
Chrome
Chrome is believed to be the desktop browser of choice for many people, and its stable web browsing experience, rich add-ons, and Google account features make Chrome a popular browser.
While Chrome on iOS doesn’t support add-ons, Chrome for iOS is a bit less scalable and playable. But if you’re also using Chrome on your desktop, you can sync your bookmarks, browsing history, and more with your Google account.
There is no doubt that Chrome is still one of the most comprehensive browsers. Despite the lack of plugins that it boasts on mobile platforms, Chrome has built-in features such as translation and search for images that allow us to navigate the web more efficiently.
Edge
Earlier this year, Microsoft released its new Edge browser. After switching to the Chromium kernel, both compatibility and stability have been improved. Such improvements have led many people to reconfigure it as their Windows 10 default browser. On iOS, the new Edge is still pretty good. I think Edge is better suited to being the default browser on phones than Chrome. For one thing, Edge has all the basics of Chrome mobile, and it even has AdBlock Plus built in to block ads.
In addition, the actual Edge experience is ideal. With a Microsoft account, we can not only sync our browsing history and favorites with the computer, but also use the “send to PC” function to open the current web page directly on the computer. If you’re looking for a cleaner, more coherent web browsing experience, the new Edge won’t disappoint.
Firefox
Firefox, also an older browser, is a little less experienced on mobile. But if you’re willing to take a closer look at its Settings screen, you’ll see that Firefox has its heart in it. Like Edge, Firefox has a built-in ad-blocking feature that makes browsing the Web a much cleaner experience. Firefox also has a built-in “Mail app” setting, which supports a number of email apps, including Gmail, Outlook and Spark. When you open a link like mailto:[email protected] in Firefox, it automatically redirects to the corresponding app instead of opening the system’s default email app. This feature doesn’t work on iOS 14, however, because the default mail app can be modified.
In general, Firefox for iOS is more suitable for users who have been using Firefox for a long time on the desktop. You can sync your content with your Firefox account, making it “seamless” across platforms.
DuckDuckGo
DuckDuckGo is a privacy-focused search engine, and its browser for mobile platforms is showing off its efforts to protect privacy. DuckDuckGo may not have as many extensions as other browsers. But when you visit a site, DuckDuckGo blocks tracking scripts for you, allowing you to browse each site with greater confidence.
In addition to its extreme focus on privacy, DuckDuckGo is a mediocre browser. The app only has the most basic web browsing function, without reading mode, translation and other common functions, which is a relatively big pity.

** Replaces the default mail application **
In addition to the browser, iOS 14 also supports replacing the default mail app. To replace the application, download the third-party app and modify the default app in the system Settings. It is worth mentioning that the system’s own “mail” app can be deleted, after replacing the new app, you can directly delete the default “mail”.
**** Actual experience how
Since the mail app is not as central to the system as The Safari browser is, there are few issues with the replacement of third-party apps. However, since it is a third-party app, it cannot quickly send emails through pop-up Windows like the “Mail” app. Instead, it must jump to in-app editing. Overall, the experience of replacing email apps is pretty good, but it’s still not seamless. There is still a problem, that is, when you click “use default email account” in some apps, you will not be redirected to the default email app, but will pop up the system email app window.
**** these applications support replacement
Third-party email apps offer a lot more functionality than official email apps compared to browsers, giving us more reasons to replace them. Whether it’s smart grouping or linking with other services, it takes email out of communication and into your productivity.
Gmail
If you use Gmail the most, Gmail for iOS might be your new default email app. A clean, clean interface and perfect integration with your Gmail account will make your email experience even better. Gmail uses artificial intelligence to identify email types for users, filtering out news and social messages that are not important and leaving more space for the important ones. You can also customize the action triggered by swiping left or right, or use smart Compose to edit your message.
In general, Gmail is like a “bundle” that has almost all the features you’d expect as an email app. But it’s only so good with Gmail itself, not so good if you’re using it to manage other emails.
Outlook
Outlook from Microsoft is also a pretty good email app. Apps separate emails by “important” and “other” to highlight important content for you. Outlook also has a built-in calendar so you can adjust your work schedule. But Outlook’s ‘focus’ feature sometimes doesn’t work as well. For example, it will put some obvious advertisements in the mail, or relatively affect the user experience.
In general, Outlook is better for managing spam-free work emails, organizing work and scheduling. If you want to take it to manage daily mail, perhaps some “kill chicken with a knife” feeling.
Spark
If you are looking for an email app that is both a light user and a productivity junker, Spark is a good choice. It boasts useful Smart categories, which intelligently analyze your email and prioritize it according to Personal, Notifications, and Newsletters, sorted in a Smart Inbox. If you enable smart push, Spark will also prioritize your personal emails based on the nature of your email so that you don’t miss out on important content. Those ads and subscriptions will not be pushed, leaving you to manually enter the app.
If you’re looking for a one-size-fits-all email tool, Spark won’t disappoint.
QQ email
In China, many people’s first or even only email is their QQ email. If you are a loyal user of QQ Mailbox, then you can also consider QQ Mailbox iOS client. As their own production of the application, in the management of QQ mailbox naturally more handy. In fact, QQ mailbox also has “advertisement mail” screening function, but can only be viewed on the web version or its own application. Moreover, QQ mailbox first-party APP can also access file transfer station, group mail and other features. If you rely on these features, other clients may not be able to satisfy you.
In general, QQ mailbox is more suitable for those users who rely heavily on QQ mailbox and its features. While other accounts can be added, the experience is not as comfortable as QQ Mail.

Although third-party apps still cannot achieve a completely “seamless” experience, there will not be a particularly serious “accusers” problem in the actual experience. Both browsers and mail applications have their advantages and disadvantages. I still recommend switching to your favorite browser or email app, both to ensure continuity and to unify your personal data across multiple platforms.
