On September 17, 2018, Apple officially released the iOS 12 update to users.

Apple introduced iOS 12 to much fanfare earlier this month, but early share gains appear to have been slow. But in the weeks that followed, iOS 12 actually overtook iOS 11, according to Mixpanel.

IOS 12 is now available on more than 50% of all iphones, ipads and iPod Touch devices in use. It took iOS 11 a month to reach that milestone, while iOS 12 achieved it in less than 20 days.

Many people thought that iOS 11 was a bad year for iOS updates, complaining about stability, bugs, and performance issues. Apple responded to those complaints with iOS 12. Apple is touting iOS 12 as a one-off upgrade, particularly a significant speed increase on older iPhone and iPad devices.

IOS 12 supports all devices that can run iOS 11, which means the iOS 12 user base can extend all the way to iPhone 5S users. Despite a slow start, iOS 12 adoption has skyrocketed over the past few days, nearly doubling in just seven days. Positive acceptance from the community (and no iOS bugs making headlines to disrupt it) has certainly helped speed up upgrades.

Mixpanel statistics, based on a combination of Web and mobile App analytics, typically have a higher percentage than Apple’s statistics, which show current active iOS versions based on App Store usage. However, Apple has yet to update its official statistics, which include a timeline for the release of iOS 12. (Apple’s official figures were last updated on September 3, reporting that iOS 11 had 85% of the market.) Last year, Apple’s official figures showed that iOS 11 didn’t surpass 50% until November.

IOS 12 share growth is likely to remain strong for the foreseeable future. IOS 12.1 will include some new features, mainly group FaceTime and more than 70 new emoticons, which will always help motivate users to upgrade. Apple is also preparing to release a number of new devices with iOS 12, including a new iPad Pro line and the iPhone XR, which will be released on October 26.
