Hello everyone, it’s the weekend again. Today, I’d like to talk about the workplace.
Speak of programmer’s duty field, everybody the first feeling is mixed very hard namely, competitive pressure is big, namely roll. And then there is the 35-year-old crisis, the work intensity is not small, all kinds of 996. And there are a variety of large and small routines and pits, said a bitter tears, working people really not easy. So I write this article, just want to share these years I summed up a few experiences, for those who are struggling in the workplace and will enter the workplace of the white people, a little help.
Career path
I don’t know if you have any feelings. In this era, there are too many virtual things and fewer and fewer real things. Just like double Eleven, it is said that all kinds of discounts, all kinds of promotions, but really buy the hand, but not much cheaper.
This is true not only in sales, but also in the workplace. Although we are practical most of the time, there are still a few things we can’t avoid being fooled by. Take job-hopping as an example. When job-hopping, many people actually don’t think too much about career development. Most of them focus on whether they can get more money for their next job and whether they will work overtime. You may not think so much about how the job fits into your career plan.
I also have this problem, although I was an algorithm post in my last company, but mainly do user portrait and growth. Relatively speaking, it is more inclined to data, rather than direct user recommendation, advertising and other such systems. The experience accumulated in the past two years is also mainly in the data, rather than in the algorithm scene. In fact, it is better to go to the black road, when job-hopping also continue to be engaged in this direction. However, I came to advertising and recommendation in a roundabout way, not to say that advertising and recommendation is not good, but can not bring the previous experience into play. So at the beginning of the time is also very uncomfortable, after all, a lot of business things do not understand, can not be fully fired, so sit for a period of time bench.
It has recently dawned on me that there are two components to our competitiveness in the workplace. One is of course our hard power, which is our technical capability, and the other is our experience. The experience we gain in a particular field can also be very valuable. So the ideal move is one where we can use both our experience and our strength, which is to follow one path rather than change tracks in the middle.
The reason is simple, because one’s core competence in the workplace is problem solving. The company is willing to use as many resources to retain you as you can solve its problems. A lot of the time technology alone is useless because you don’t know where to push. For example, you have never done a search before, no matter how strong your skills are, it is impossible to do a good search engine overnight. The process of building a mature system requires experience and trial and error, not just head-snapping. So the higher up the ladder, the more mediocre their technical skills may be, but the more they think and experience, the better they are at solving problems.
Unfortunately, with so many new jobs and businesses popping up, it’s not easy to stay focused throughout your career. You can check the check box to see if there are positions in all directions. Plus, there’s more to it than that: salary, stock, and benefits all affect our decisions. If you can’t make great progress in one direction, it is easy to encounter bottlenecks, which is why I put career path in the first place.
When we are job-hopping or choosing a new job, we should first consider the career path, and we should make use of the advantages and experience we have accumulated before. Otherwise it is very likely to play adversely to the new environment, quickly sit on the bench.
Pay attention to the network
As early as when I was in high school, an old teacher who was familiar with my parents taught me a principle of life in earnest: a person needs three conditions to become a success. In the first place he does, and in the second place they say he does, and in the third they do well who say he does.
I was too young to understand, so let’s just hear it out. It was not until I experienced something this year that I inadvertently recalled what the teacher had told me that I found it was really reasonable. Networking is not empty, it’s not deceptive, it’s really useful. But how to network is a big question that few people can answer.
In street stall literature, people are always advised to make more friends in social life. However, networking is not equal to socialize, nor is it equal to making many fair-weather friends. I personally understand that the most valuable social interactions are weak ones. This means people you don’t know very well, such as former colleagues, school friends, classmates you don’t know very well, etc. In fact, there are not too many things in network management, just one point, is to manage the outside world’s views and cognition on us, maintain the “human set”. Simply put, we need to pay attention to feathers and word of mouth, who knows when it helps.
There is a common rule in many entrepreneurs’ experiences that the followers who participate in the startup in the early days are motivated by the recognition of the person, not by the cause. For example, Lao Luo, I am not a fan of Lao Luo, nor do I like him very much, but there is no denying that he is a very charming idealist. That’s why so many people are willing to help him and join him. You can be interested to know that in the early days when Lao Luo founded the English training class, in order to fight for students, the wages for the teachers were very low, and these teachers were willing to take a low salary to participate in it, just because of the recognition of Lao Luo.
Truly great opportunities in the workplace are scarce, and many are accessible only to insiders. For example, can you see the recruitment of Tencent King of Glory department on the recruitment website? Cannot see of course, because such post is too precious, it is internal recommendation digestion commonly. If you are in such a position, there is a vacancy in the group, and the boss asks you to push someone in, who do you say you will look for? I suspect that in nine cases out of ten, you will seek out your best former colleague, even if you haven’t spoken to him in years.
The reverse is also true. When those of us in a weak social network have a good opportunity, whether we think of us or not depends largely on how well we have done with them in the past and how reliable we are, which I think is the core value of networking.
Careful choice
Secondly, ONE thing I would like to say is to choose carefully, mainly when we change jobs. We must be clear about what our strategic goal is. Is it for a big raise, for career advancement, because you’ve hit a wall, or because you want to get out of your current environment?
In the early stages, we often change jobs to get out of our current environment, because there is something that makes us unhappy, so we change jobs and leave. Of course, the environment is very important, we need to pursue a better working environment, but it is better that we can find some larger meaning. If you just focus on a little bit, it’s easy to lose.
There is no shortage of opportunities on the Internet nowadays. If you have used a few recruitment software programs, you are sure to receive a lot of calls and messages from headhunters every recruitment season. In case you don’t realize you’re too comfortable and forget to jump ship. Many people may not be so willing to change jobs themselves, but they can’t stand the various routines of headhunters. First you’re lured into handing over your resume with a high salary from another company, then you’re lured into an interview, and then you get offered. A lot of people just change jobs without knowing it, and of course they lose sight of their strategic goals.
In the Internet era, information is becoming more and more convenient and cheaper, and the consequence is that valuable information is becoming more and more rare. The information that is everywhere is rubbish to some extent, the information that is valuable is hard to get, and the information gap is widening rather than narrowing. In this case, we must be rational and cautious when making decisions in our career. It is important to remember that scarcity is the most valuable thing and that information everywhere is not always the best.
Once you know that, at least you won’t get ripped off by headhunters. No matter what the headhunter says, you can remain unmoved. Because most of the positions that headhunters can recommend are positions that are not widely available in the market, they can think of nothing more than PDD and headlines. Do you think that this kind of job casting a net everywhere can be a core department, can have a good development prospects? Of course, I am not saying that these opportunities are not good, there will be some relatively good, but it is a test of luck, in case of bad luck is actually quite hurt, before the age of 35 is the golden time for us to develop ourselves, very precious, can not easily hurt.
If you want to change jobs, I suggest you can contact the former colleagues or alumni, classmates, or find some predecessors, old boss to consult, is also OK. Such opportunities obtained through internal contacts are more likely to be reliable and precious than those obtained through external channels such as headhunting and recruitment software. In a word, job-hopping must be cautious, plan before you move, never rush.
Both the inside and the outside are indispensable
Finally, I would like to talk to you about the conditions for development. I used to think in the workplace, of course, talent is the most important, talent is important. I believe that many people may feel the same way, especially young people who have just graduated. But as I learned more and more about social beatings, I realized that wasn’t quite right.
A person to go up the road is actually internal and external two aspects of the joint effect, both are indispensable, internal of course is our own ability and quality, and then also need external assistance, external is the outside world to our trust and evaluation. You have the ability and need your boss to trust you with responsibility in order for you to deliver the results needed to advance. If your boss trusts you, you can’t do it yourself. Because the boss also has to report to a higher boss, he can’t risk his career to support you, unless the boss is your dad.
Why does Jiang Taigong want to go fishing and not submit his resume himself? The reason was that he had to let King Wen of Zhou feel that he had the talent of heaven and earth from the bottom of his heart, so that he could appoint the important task in a solid way. If he went to submit his resume, King Wen of Zhou might even consider whether he could go to the battlefield at such an old age. Pang Tong although the name of chicken chick, but early not trusted by Liu Bei, also difficult to pay ambition. Zhuge Liang, on the other hand, had a very good plan at the beginning. Liu Bei paid three visits to the thatched hut before finally leaving the mountain. Obviously, Liu Bei thought Kong Ming was more talented and was more willing to give him the opportunity.
In the workplace, the reason why foreign monks can recite sutras is not that foreign monks are more glib, but that the boss is more willing to believe that they have real skills. So why doesn’t the boss trust the people below? It’s obvious that the following person didn’t bring the changes that the boss wanted or expected during his or her tenure. When you understand this, you can understand why, in big companies, the boss doesn’t promote one from below, but hires one from the outside. It’s not because the boss is stupid, and it’s because there’s nothing to fight under.
So if I want to change jobs in the future, I will pay more attention to these two things than the salary. I need a new environment with people who recognize me, a new environment where I can do what I can. To put it bluntly, I need a boss or a team that believes I can solve problems and is willing to give me a chance. Because the salary can meet the opportunity is actually many, but can meet this point is very difficult. Many people in the workplace like to follow their old subordinates, and others like to follow their old bosses, which I always thought was office politics. After two years of social beatings, I found that all of these are reasonable.
Ideally, we all want a boss to be meritocratic, but that’s the ideal. Chances are, you don’t have a good relationship with your boss, which makes it hard for her to keep an eye on you, making it harder for her to know if you’re talented. And talent and ability are not the only indicators, through the ages to rely on the proud sages, often buried more, less success. What’s more, talent is not necessarily more the better, sometimes enough on the line. You can rule a thousand men, but I want a fist fight right now.
So when we enter the workplace, in addition to care about our own ability or experience of growth. We should also put our eyes outwards and see whether the external environment is conducive to us exerting our strength and accumulating public praise. At the beginning of our career, these things are more important than salary and rank.
