I finally became a Google Developer Expert (GDE) for Web technology. 🎉
What is a Google development technologist?
Google Development Technologists (GDEs) is a team of experienced product strategists, designers, developers and marketing experts from around the globe, and actively support developers, start-ups and companies to change the world through Web applications and mobile applications.
How do I become a Google development technologist?
I volunteered at the Google Developer Group (GDG) in Kuala Lumpur in October 2015 and became a community organizer a few months later. At that time, I was fortunate enough to meet a lot of great developers, Google development technologists, and Googlers at GDG. That’s when I learned about the project with the Google development technologist.
At the same time, I also started learning and using some of Google’s development technologies, including Polymer, Progressive Web Apps (PWA) and Firebase. In December of that year, I shared for the first time “The Future of Web Development: Polymer and Firebase”.
This was my first step, and I found that sharing my knowledge with others was very interesting and meaningful at that time! At the same time, I started developing some small Side Projects, such as Remote for Slides and I/O Extended ’17 Kuala Lumpur PWA.
I originally planned to apply for GDE two or three years after I graduated from college, but honestly, none of my projects happened on time. (For example, I was planning to attend Google I/O after graduation, but I did it in my sophomore year 😑)
I’ve met a lot of Gdes on social networks, and every now and then they ask me why I haven’t tried to become a GDE. But I personally thought I lacked experience, so I turned them down.
A few months later, a Google employee left a message telling me that he suggested I email him my profile and he would help me determine if I qualified to be a GDE.
At their recommendation (egged on?) Then, out of nowhere, I started the GDE interview process. The interview process was very interesting and I learned a lot from it. If you want to learn more about the GDE interview process and procedures, you can read Aaron Frost’s Preparing to Become a GDE article.
SPAM??
If you successfully pass the interview, the system will automatically send you an email. However, the day after my interview, my email box was empty. Until a GDE sent me a message:
That’s when I knew something was wrong. In theory I should have received an email from Google, but I didn’t. Either there’s a glitch in the system, or…
I can’t believe I found that email in the spam folder! At this point, I began to wonder about Google’s spam filtering system because it took me 16 hours to see this super important email! Still, when I saw the email, I was so excited that I had finally passed the interview! (Though I can’t believe it)
Note: Spam is the same name as Spam.
The next step…
In The next few months, I will be teaching Web development to students at The One Academy. At the same time, I hope I can pass on what I know to more developers in the area.
