I’ve been studying singing for the last few months. I wrote an answer about self-learning piano on Zhihu before:
How to learn piano by yourself?www.zhihu.com
However, for those who have not sung since childhood, learning to sing (or, more specifically, to sing pop) is much more difficult than learning to play an instrument! Intonation, breath, articulation, rhythm…… It’s so hard to sing well! Not to mention ending processing, dynamic processing, vocal and timbre transformation, etc.
And, for untalented people like us, we don’t always know when we’re wrong. If you record yourself singing, it sounds completely different.
How to do? I think it’s very suitable for AI technology. As long as the AI can give us the right feedback and advice, first sing each word correctly, then sing each line correctly, then sing each paragraph correctly, sing all correctly, muscle memory, then think about your interpretation.
Step one: Know your own voice.
A few days ago, I was studying wechat small program, so I wrote a small program “voice genie.” Its first feature, spectrum testing, lets you see your own voice, and can also be used for various audio tests.
You don’t need to download the app. You can search for “Voice Wizard” on wechat and click it to use it. It’s very convenient:
Or you can use wechat to identify this small program code:
After entering, sing a steady note and click the red button while singing, you can automatically record and analyze:
AI can’t do without data. After the experiment, you might as well feedback some data in the comments of this article. Thank you very much.
1. What is your normal speech pitch?
- You can just say “say”. Don’t be nervous. Use your usual tone of voice and try to be natural.
- The male voice is around 140Hz.
2. What’s the lowest you can sing?
- In the middle register, step down. You can sing NAY, or whatever you feel comfortable with.
- Note that it may change to “vocal bubbles” as you go down. This does not count and the program should recognize it automatically. Use the lowest real tone. The male voice is usually around 75~85Hz.
3. Where is the change point?
- In the middle register, sing your way up in true voice. I suggest singing MA. When you feel the need to change your voice, you change your voice.
- The male voice is around 340Hz. Be careful not to force it. It can hurt your throat.
4. What is the highest you can sing (safety first, don’t rush).
- You can sing NAY GEE BUH, etc. (these are great). Experienced friends can say falsetto, or head (not whistle, ha ha).
- The male voice is probably around 600Hz. You can get a lot higher with practice.
