How to write a front-end resume that will get you an interview

This is an article written from an interviewer’s point of view for beginning and middle level front-end developers.

As a front-end developer, you build something visible, and you want to make it look good. The same goes for your resume. The spacing is reasonable, readable and comfortable.

What you will learn from this article:

  1. Basic resume writing skills for software developers.
  2. How to put IT skills and technical abilities on your RESUME.
  3. A step-by-step guide on how to present your past work experience.
  4. How to build your front-end portfolio.
  5. Write a resume using a resume builder.

1. Start with the basics

Your contact information

Contact information should go at the top of your resume. Present as much information as you want to share.

Summary statement

Your concluding statement should be a short and compelling professional summary of your career accomplishments and future plans.

Keep the following points in mind as you write:

  • Don’t declare yourself an Angular[JS]/React developer unless the position explicitly requires it. Labeling yourself as an X developer means telling people that you only want to do X development, and it makes people think that you might be rigid or otherwise unadaptable.
  • Ask yourself, what keywords should I include to ensure the target audience continues to read the rest of my resume?
  • Read the job description posted by the company and memorize key words and phrases. What are they looking for? What makes you different from other applicants?

education

Unless you are a recent college graduate, there is no need to list your GPA. Your career accomplishments are more important than your GPA.

2. Technical skills

For software developers, this is the most important part of what makes you stand out. As you list your skills, you need to demonstrate a deep understanding of what the skills are, in what context, and at what level. It needs to be as honest and clear as possible.

Introduction to techniques

  • If you list HTML5, you don’t need to list HTML4. HTML5 implies HTML4 and below. The same is true for CSS3/CSS2.
  • Be specific about your proficiency level and be honest. By describing your proficiency level, the reader of your resume will quickly get a clearer picture of you, which will save time for both of you.
  • If a skill isn’t directly related to the position, but could be relevant to the industry as a whole, include it. This will give you a better chance of being singled out by recruiters.

What skills don’t need to be demonstrated

Don’t write it like this. This is the entire IT department.

Try not to show your skills like the example above. If you’re just learning a new skill, don’t include it on your resume. This will prevent recruiters from referring you for a job that isn’t a good fit.

Work experience

Use verbs

In this section, you need to present information succinctly. Use verbs to impress the recruiter, but avoid exaggerations.

customized

Highlight relevant information about the job you are applying for and keep it short. This will set you apart from those who are sending the same resume for every job.

Less is more

However, please don’t exaggerate your experience, because the interviewer will ask questions based on what you present on your resume. Remember that less is more.

Include relevant keywords

The goal is to beat the AOS (applicant tracking system) and create a resume that headhunters and hiring managers can spot.

You can do this by analyzing the job description of the target position, determining the specific words and phrases that best describe it, and then applying them to your resume.

Follow this step-by-step guide:

// First, write down the name of your company, your position, and how long you have worked there.Copy the code

ABC Company, front-end developer, 2017 to present

// If your company is not well known, give a brief introductionCopy the code

ABC is a company that makes the world a better place. We try to solve people’s problems.

// List your major accomplishments and include relevant keywordsCopy the code
  • A prototype for visualizing transport routes was developed using React, Antd, and Deck.gl.
  • React and Material-UI are used to build a scheduling tool in gantt chart form.
  • Balance requirements, user experience and deadlines in order to get most of the business value in the limited time.
// List the techniques you useCopy the code

Technology: React, deck. gl, Python, Recharts, Node.js

Your work experience should be described like this:

4. Portfolio — Sets you apart from your peers

As programming training institutions increase the number of front-end developers, developers flood the developer job market.

Adding a bit of your unique experience or project will definitely set you apart from your peers. It’s also important to build your own portfolio, as the definition of “experience” varies from person to person.

Showing past jobs and projects can quickly prove your Web development skills, which can increase your chances of landing an interview in a competitive market. You can upload your work to CodePen or CakeResume.

Describe the work in your portfolio

Remember, though, that providing links to your work is not building a portfolio. Similarly, a wireframing or the visuals of your application that doesn’t reflect your ideas is a bad idea.

As you build your portfolio, include the following:

  • Screenshots or links to live demonstrations.
  • What’s your job?
  • What is your contribution?
  • The language, framework, and design patterns you use.

Some examples:

ThisIsMe Web App Information Architecture – Collection of works by Jayd Gibbon

Seul Landing Part 1 – Stefan’s Portfolio

If you’re starting from scratch, I have a few suggestions

  • Imitate your favorite websites.
  • Start a tech blog. It can also be part of your portfolio.
  • Go to a hackathon and do something.
  • Start solving your own problems.

5. Online resume generator

Before we start writing a great resume, try to think about how you want your resume to look. Personally, I recommend software developers use online resume generators such as CakeResume (free) to write their resumes.

Here are the advantages of online resume generators:

  • They help you use the latest design to create your resume, which will make a good impression on future employers.
  • They can save you time. Especially for those who don’t know where to start and don’t want to waste time adjusting columns and borders.
  • They help ensure that you don’t miss out on any important information.
  • They make it easier to update resumes and replace information. You can adjust your resume to suit different employers.

6. Use hyperlinks

Use hyperlinks if you decide to use an online resume builder to build your resume. Even if you convert your online version to PDF, your links will still work.

When to use hyperlinks

  • You want to showcase the site you’ve been working on — you just provide the URL for that site.
  • You need to mention the third party services or SDKS you use.
  • You want to present a record of solutions to problems you have previously tried to solve on your personal blog or in the media.
