You can record video for the entire screen or selected parts of the screen.
1. Use the Screenshot toolbar
To view the Screenshot toolbar, press Shift, Command, and 5 at the same time. You will see screen controls for recording the entire screen, recording selected parts of the screen, or taking still images of the screen:
Record the entire screen
- Click in the screen controls. The pointer will change to the camera.
- Tap any screen to start recording the screen, or tap Record in the screen control.
- To stop recording, click on the menu bar. Alternatively, press command-control-Esc (Escape).
- Use thumbnails for trimming, sharing, storing, or other operations.
Record selected parts of the screen
- Click in the screen controls.
- Drag to select the area of the screen you want to record. To move the entire selected area, drag from within the selected area.
- To start recording, click Record in the screen controls.
- To stop recording, click on the menu bar. Alternatively, press command-control-Esc (Escape).
- Use thumbnails for trimming, sharing, storing, or other operations.
Trim, share, and store
When you stop recording, a thumbnail of the video is briefly displayed in the lower right corner of the screen.
- If you do nothing or swipe the thumbnail to the right, the recorded content is automatically stored.
- Click on the thumbnail to open the recorded content. Then, you can clickTo prune the record, or clickTo share.
- Drag the thumbnail to move the recorded content to another location (such as a manuscript, E-mail, access window, or wastebasket).
- Click on the thumbnail to show more options. For example, you can change the location of the storage, open the recorded content in an application, or simply delete the recorded content without storing it.
Change the Settings
Click Options in the screen controls to change the following Settings:
- Store to: Select a location for automatic storage of recorded content, such as desktop, document, or clipboard.
- Timer: Select the time to start recording: record immediately after you click, or record 5 seconds or 10 seconds after you click.
- Microphone: To record your voice or other audio while recording the screen, select the microphone.
- Display floating thumbnails: Select whether to display thumbnails.
- Remember last selection: Choose whether to default to what you selected the last time you used the tool.
- Show mouse click: Select whether to display a black circle around the pointer when you click in the record.
2. Use QuickTime Player
- Open QuickTime Player from the Applications folder and choose File > New Screen Record from the menu bar. You will then see the screen controls described above or the Screen Recording window described below.
- To start recording, you can clickNext to the arrow to change recording Settings:
- To use screen recording to record voice or other audio, select a microphone. To monitor audio during recording, adjust the volume slider. If there is audio feedback, turn down the volume or use a headset with a microphone.
- To display a black circle around the pointer at the point point, select Show mouse Clicks in recording.
- To start recording, click, and then do one of the following:
- Tap anywhere on the screen to start recording the entire screen.
- Alternatively, drag to select an area to record, and then click the Start Recording button within that area.
- To stop recording, click on the menu bar, or press command-control-Esc (Escape).
- When you stop recording, QuickTime Player automatically opens the recorded content. You can now play, edit, or share recorded content.
So there are two ways to record a screen on a Mac without using a third-party tool.
