My friends often ask me how I design a LOGO. It really boils down to three words: inspiration, experience, and experiment.
Is that all there is? Ok, so today I’m going to talk about how I design a LOGO.
Communication is always the premise of design
When I get a design assignment, my first instinct is not to start working on it. I didn’t even start the idea (because I had no previous experience, I thought I understood the customer’s needs, but the result was quite different from what party A thought). Communication before design is very necessary! So now when I receive a demand from party A, I prefer to talk more about the other party’s wishes, because it is good for both sides.
Next I will use an example to illustrate how I designed a LOGO.
The designer must have a broad vision
As the saying goes, different fields are like mountains, but as a designer, a wide range of knowledge is definitely a plus. When you get an assignment from party A, make sure you do everything you can to learn about the industry party A is in. Because if you do not even know the industry of party A, only with your understanding to wishful design, the final result is nine out of ten the other party is not satisfied.
No matter how experienced you are, you need research before you design
So how to design a satisfactory LOGO for Party A? In addition to understanding party A’s industry, but also to understand Party A’s aesthetic needs, this is to investigate party A’s company positioning and the audience. Just like you can’t create a cartoon logo for luxury goods, you can’t create a tech-savvy logo for a cartoon company.
I once received such a demand that the company of Party A is called Weiye Film and Television Culture Media. After communication, I learned that Party A mainly serves orthodox large enterprises. Therefore, I should take composition into consideration when designing, and the color matching should not be too gentle, but as a media industry, the color matching should not be too dull. Together, I decided to design their LOGO like this.
Learn to extract key elements and try to make meaningful connections
The first letter is W, so as a media industry, what do you think of first? After a brief brainstorming session, I distilled the following elements:
So, what can the letter W be extended for? Try sketching:
Then optimize the details:
Then the basic shape of the LOGO is decided.
Here’s the final image:
LOGO design is not done with the LOGO
Doesn’t party A just want a LOGO, you say? No, when a LOGO is out of context, it’s a failure.
Monochromatic processing is the first consideration, if it is flattened, then its intersection needs to be treated separately, as in the image above where the visual intersection can be cut off.
If you want to, you should also provide some simple usage scenarios for the client, which I usually do by putting together a solid business proposal like this:
Of course, it’s best to include some usage scenarios, like this:
For example, the design of business cards (to hide key customer information).
At this point, a relatively good LOGO design is complete.
Believe in this way, you and your service customers will become more trust, service customers will be more and more quality. Mutual promotion and win-win situation.
The above content is my opinion, if there is any improper place welcome to be corrected. Of course, if you have the corresponding confusion can also communicate with me. I’d like to share my design experience with you.
