With the launch of Android 11 on Pixel, The Android GPU Inspector (AGI) has been upgraded from an untested developer preview to an open Beta. AGI helped the developers we worked with identify performance bottlenecks in the product during the developer preview. With the open Beta coming up, we look forward to hearing your feedback.

What is the Android GPU Inspector?

AGI is a graphics analysis tool that lets you see how your Android device’s GPU is working to better understand graphics bottlenecks and optimize game and application performance based on 3D graphics apis. The tool displays a timeline of events for running games or applications, including system activity, high-frequency GPU hardware counters, and GPU activity information if you are using Vulkan.

Which devices support this tool?

AGI relies on updated firmware and video drivers to get the information it needs, and the first devices to support it are Pixel 4 and 4XL running Android 11. We are currently working with device manufacturers and SoC vendors to support more devices, and as we do so, we see a lot of value in just being able to access GPU information — even just on one device.

In collaboration with Blizzard Entertainment Inc. In collaboration with NetEase, Inc., AGI helped save 45% of vertex bandwidth for the upcoming Diablo Immortal, a diablo-style Gothic action RPG.

Diablo: Immortality

In a collaboration with King, AGI will launch the upcoming Crash Bandicoot: On the Run! The GPU frame time is shortened from 11-16ms to 8ms, and the game runs stably, which reduces the battery consumption of the game, runs faster, and the game experience is smoother.

▽ Wild Wolf: Full speed charge

In their collaboration with Jam City, AGI reduced the GPU frame Time for World War Doh: Real Time PvP by 45%.

▽ Dough World War: Real-time player battle

Optimize the tutorial

We will share instructions on how to use the tool and how to solve common problems encountered in real games in a future post. Here’s how to use AGI to find optimization points in game textures.
