If you’re a Chrome user, you’re no stranger to the cute little dinosaur that you see every time your Internet connection is disconnected. Hit the space bar to start the little dinosaur Parkour game.
The game is called Chrome Dino, and you can now open Chrome without having to disconnect from the Internet. Just type Chrome :// Dino in the address bar to play.
All this is well known. As Chrome celebrates its 10th anniversary, let’s listen to Edward, Sebastien Gabriel and Alan Bettes, creators of the Chrome design team, talk about the story behind the dinosaur.
Chrome Dino was originally created as an Easter egg in early 2014. In a modern world where the Internet is everywhere, disconnecting from the Internet can feel like a return to prehistoric times, resulting in the creation of this tiny dinosaur. Since the first version, the game has been pixelated visually, and the little dinosaurs have stiff movements that remind users immediately of retro video games.
There was disagreement about what to do with the baby dinosaur at the time of the design. The original baby dinosaur also growled, like the one below, to announce that it was still alive. But it ended up being the little running dinosaur that we see today.
According to Edward, this was his first time writing a game, considering physical jumping, collision detection, platform compatibility, and other issues. The game didn’t run well after launch, especially on older Android devices, so the design team rewrote the code, and as of December 2014, the game had been expanded to all platforms.
The game is currently being played more than 270 million times a month on desktop and mobile, mostly in emerging markets with users in Countries like India, Brazil, Mexico or Indonesia.
After four years of iteration, there are now pterodactyls, night mode, and more. To mark Chrome’s 10th anniversary, the design team also released an “Anniversary Edition,” adding elements such as a birthday cake, birthday hat, balloons and more.
The ultimate question!!
How long was the road before the little dinosaur, and where did it end?
Edward tells us that the baby dinosaur could have run for about 17 million years, about as long as it lived on earth…… What? You don’t believe me? Then go for it
