What is FreeBSD?

FreeBSD is a feature, speed, and stability focused operating system that supports many platforms. It originated from BSD, the UNIX® version developed by the University of California, Berkeley. It is developed and maintained by a large community of volunteers.

Advanced features

FreeBSD offers networking, performance, security, and compatibility features that even today’s best commercial operating systems lack.

Powerful Internet solutions

FreeBSD is ideal for Internet or Intranet servers. Even under heavy load, it still uses memory efficiently, providing good response times for thousands of user processes running simultaneously.

Embedded platform support

FreeBSD brings advanced network operating system features to embedded platforms and devices, whether they are high-end Intel-based devices or ARM, PowerPC, or MIPS hardware platforms. From mail and networking equipment to routers, school servers and wireless access points, vendors around the world rely on FreeBSD’s consolidated compilation and cross-compilation environment and other advanced features as the foundation for their embedded products. The Berkeley Open source license allows them to decide what changes they want to contribute.

Able to run a large selection of applications

With more than 33,000 libraries and applications in ports, FreeBSD supports a variety of applications for desktop systems, servers, and embedded platforms.

Easy to install

FreeBSD can be installed on a variety of media, including a common CD, DVD, or directly through FTP or NFS server. You only need to follow the installation instructions.

FreeBSD isfree

You might think that such a good operating system would cost a lot of money to buy, but FreeBSD is free and includes the source code. If you would like to purchase or download a copy to experience FreeBSD, you can learn more here.

Help the FreeBSD

Helping FreeBSD is not difficult. All you need to do is figure out where FreeBSD needs to improve, and send your (carefully written and organized) improvements back to the FreeBSD project by submitting a problem report, which is passed directly to the FreeBSD Committers you know. We welcome any improvements, from documentation to artwork to source code. In addition, you can learn more about FreeBSD by helping with the article.

Even if you’re not a developer, you can still help FreeBSD in other ways. Donations to the FreeBSD Foundation, a non-profit organization, are completely tax-deductible. For more information about the FreeBSDFoundation, please contact [email protected] or write to: The FreeBSD Foundation, 2222 14th Street, Boulder, CO 80302 USA.
