The Apple Configurator 2 is a flexible, device-centric design that allows you to quickly and easily configure one or more iPhone, iPad, and Apple TV devices that connect to your Mac via USB or, if it’s an Apple TV, wirelessly. Once the device is connected, you can see it in the Apple Configurator 2. You only need to select one device or multiple devices and perform the operation. With Apple Configurator 2, you can update software, install apps and configure description files, rename and change wallpapers on your device, export device information and documentation, and do other things.

The Apple Configurator 2 also includes Windows that display device information, such as operating system version, serial number, hardware ID and address, available capacity, and log information collected by the computer.

What is restoration

In rare cases, such as a power failure during a macOS upgrade, the Mac may not respond, so a firmware fix must be made. Fixes are firmware updates and recoveryOS updates to the latest version. The fix is intended not to make any changes to the start bulk, the user’s data bulk, or any other bulk.

What is recovery

You must restore the firmware and wipe the internal flash if:

Mac cannot be started from boot volume or recoveryOS

Failed to repair firmware. Procedure

Note Back up data before restoring the Mac. Restoring a Mac involves restoring firmware, updating recoveryOS to the latest version, and erasing and installing the latest version of macOS on internal storage. After this process is complete, all data on any internal schema volume cannot be recovered.

This task includes the following Mac computers with Apple chips:

Mac Mini (M1, 2020)

MacBook Pro (13-inch, M1, 2020)

MacBook AIr (M1, 2020)

To do this, you must have:

The latest version, Apple Configurator 2, is installed on internet-connected Macs

You may need to configure or firewall ports to allow all network traffic from Apple devices to enter Apple’s network 17.0.0.0/8.

Supported USB-C to USB-C charging cables, such as those sold by Apple (not available in all countries or regions)

Supported USB-A to USB-C cable

The USB-C cable must support power and data. Lei Li 3 cable is not supported.

Repair or recovery process

The repair or recovery process consists of the following steps:

1. Start the Apple Configurator 2 on the second Mac and connect it to the Mac

2. Use a special key sequence to restart the Mac

3. Perform the following operations using the Apple Configurator 2:

Fix the firmware and reinstall the latest version of recoveryOS.

Restore the firmware, erase all data, and reinstall the latest version of recoveryOS and macOS.

Step 1: Set a Mac using the Apple Configurator 2 and connect a USB-C cable

1. Please verify:

The latest version of Apple Configurator 2 is installed

The Mac is plugged into the power supply

Access to the Internet

2. Insert the USB-C cable (with any required adapter).

3. Start the Apple Configurator 2.

Step 2: Prepare the Mac Mini

1. Insert the monitor to see when the recovery process is complete.

2. Disconnect the Mac Mini from power for at least 10 seconds.

3. Hold down the power button.

4. Connect the power supply while holding down the power button.

5. Release the power button.

Status indicator light should be amber.

[Note] The Mac Mini doesn’t show any screen activity.

Step 2: Get your Apple laptop ready

1. Press the power button.

2. While holding down the power button, press all three of the following keys for approximately 10 seconds:

The right Shift key

The Option key

The Control key

3.10 seconds later, immediately release the three buttons but continue to hold down the power button until the device appears in the Apple Configurator 2.

[Note] Apple laptops don’t show any screen activity.

Step 3: Fix the firmware and install the latest recoveryOS

1. In Apple Configurator 2In the device window, select the Mac whose chip firmware you want to fix and recoveryOS update to the latest version.

2. Perform one of the following operations:

Choose Operation > Advanced > Repair Device, and then click Repair.

Hold down the Control key and click on the selected device and choose Advanced > Repair Device, then click Repair.

Note: If the power of any Mac runs out during this process, start the repair process again.

3. Wait for the process to complete. The Apple logo appears and disappears during this process.

4. After the repair process is complete, the Mac restarts.

[Note] When fixing the firmware, you must confirm that the fix was successful, as Apple Configurator 2 May not remind you.

5. Exit the Apple Configurator 2, and unplug any adapters and cables.

Step 3: Restore the firmware, erase all data, and reinstall the latest version of recoveryOS and macOS

1. In Apple Configurator 2In the Device window, select the Mac you want to restore.

2. Perform one of the following operations:

Choose Operation > Restore, and then click Restore.

Hold down the Control key, click on the selected device, choose Action > Restore, and then click Restore.

Note If the power of any Mac runs out during this process, start the recovery process again.

3. Wait for the process to complete. The Apple logo appears and disappears during this process.

4. After the recovery process is complete, the Mac restarts.

[Note] When restoring a Mac, you must confirm that it has been successfully restored, as Apple Configurator 2 May not remind you.

5. If the restoration is successful, the macOS Settings Assistant is displayed.

6. Exit the Apple Configurator 2, and unplug any adapters and cables.
