After writing a post about Fiddler Everywhere: The Next Fiddler Everywhere, I posted it to the platform and received feedback on features and ideas. I went to the official website these days and got some new information, so I would like to share it with you.

In my opinion, most likely it won’t catch on.

At the beginning, I was surprised to see the GUI of this software, which felt like the software I wanted, helping me to do some work better in a code-free environment. However, after I read the introduction on the official website, I found that the positioning of the software was greatly different from my expectation.

Fiddler Everywhere is positioned first as commercial collaboration software and second as a debugging tool and proxy tool.

Fiddler Everywhere’s features are available in both the free and professional versions. However, the Fiddler Everywhere Pro version expands the sharing and collaboration options of the free version. The free version has some restrictions related to sharing quotas. For a detailed comparison of the free and professional versions, see the table below.

Characteristics of the free pro
Capture and examine traffic infinite infinite
Create composer Request infinite infinite
Create a saved session entry Maximum 5 sessions infinite
Share a saved session Maximum 5 sessions (maximum 1 user) 1000 session
Shared session size The biggest 5 MB Maximum 50 MB
Email support infinite

The main limitation is in the area of teamwork. The standalone version should be good enough, but it only extends fiddler’s functionality a bit, so far it’s not a major testing tool. But if you take the cost aside, it’s quite attractive. With many teams developing test collaboration tools or process solutions to collaboration problems, Fiddler Everywhere offers a great solution.

Function loss

Fiddler Everywhere sounds like Fiddler, so I thought I would inherit fiddler’s functionality and expand it. I didn’t expect to see a lot of feature emasculation, including network emulation, environment variables, associated execution and script support.

I checked the product roadmap on fiddler Everywhere’s website and found that these features may not appear in future versions of Fiddler Everywhere for a long time due to positioning differences.

  • Product Roadmap for 2020:

Debug and modify traffic

In the next major release in 2019, we will be able to add breakpoints and modify the server’s response.

Import/export sessions

We will optimize the import/export session to import and export traffic to a file.

Check the traffic

We’ll show you a more convenient way to check sessions through Cookie, JSON, XML, and other different inspectors.

request

We will enable you to write complex requests to the server.

To filter traffic

We will provide the ability to filter your traffic.

Personal opinion: In 2020, existing functions will still be strengthened, and there will be no supplement for niche functions. I personally look forward to script support because I can customize the functionality.

The update frequency

Here’s the update for 2020:

  • Fiddler Everywhere v1.0.1 August 07, 2020
  • Fiddler Everywhere v1.0.0 July 27, 2020
  • Fiddler Everywhere v0.11.0 July 08, 2020
  • Fiddler Everywhere v0.10.0 June 01, 2020

The update frequency is ok, from June on the basic month more, but the function is really not too many exciting highlights, based on the current roadmap, IN fact, I do not recommend using this tool, even though all the functions are free.

Other tools

Telerik also has a complete set of solutions and related tools, and I took a quick look at them and was really impressed.

I can say very good, this level of business tools really do a good job, but I look at the price, instantly cold…

There are other CI/CD tools that all come to the same conclusion.

To repeat my point: the odds are not going to catch on.
