preface

Recently, it is often found that Windows10 system is stuck, notebook fan sound is particularly loud, the CPU occupation of the local system has been maintained at about 100%, the slow response of the program seriously affects efficiency. The situation may vary depending on the Version of Windows, but the task manager shows that high CPU processes are concentrated in Windows Update, which is the source of the high CPU problem. However, looking back on the automatic update experience of Windows XP/Vista/7/10, Microsoft has been moving forward. At least my X230 has been upgraded to 1803 with the first version of Windows10 Pro after replacing it with SSD and large memory. No more reinstalling your computer every once in a while because of too much junk data or slow system response. What’s your story?

The Windows Update process is to blame for high CPU usage

Disable Windows 10 updates

If you do not want to disable Windows 10 updates, manually stop the Windows Update service and check whether the fault can be rectified

  1. Go to “Service Hosts: Local Systems” in Task Manager -> “Windows Update”, right click, go to “Services”
  2. Find “Windows Update” in the list of services, right-click, and stop
  3. Go to “Windows Update” in the list of services, right-click, properties, and select “Disable” for startup type.
  4. Open C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution and delete all the files in it. If you can delete all the files, the CPU should be back to normal. If you can’t delete any files, it may be that “Windows Update” is not completely closed
  5. Press Win +R to bring up and run, enter “gpedit. MSC” and click “OK” to bring up “Local Group Policy Editor”.
  6. Expand “Computer Configuration”, “Administrative Templates”, “Windows Components”, “Windows Updates”, find “Configuration Automatic Updates” on the right, and double-click
  7. On the configuration screen, select Disabled in 1-3 order, click Apply, and click OK to restart the PC
  8. Open C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution and delete all files in it

At this point, the CPU should be back to normal, but if not, it’s a case by case scenario
