As a programmer, in addition to good programming ability and computer foundation, he must also have certain English ability. At least, he can understand the English related to computer programming. He can understand the solutions given by others on Google, StackOverflow or Github, which is called as the three key tools for programmers to solve problems. And can understand the English technical documents, do not need to wait for the Translation of the Chinese version, even some relatively unpopular technology, may not be translated.

But today, I found a Github project, and I found that it is also very important to pronounce professional words. After all, when communicating with colleagues, we are used to speaking English words directly, such as Linux, Python, Java, and we don’t specially find the corresponding Chinese translation. Even if we find it, Colleagues may not be able to connect Chinese meaning with English words.

The Github project address is as follows:

Github.com/shimohq/chi…

This is a collection of the most mispronounced words by Chinese programmers. As shown in the figure below:

There are now more than 8,000 stars, and they are listed in alphabetical order, starting from A to Z, as shown below:

When I saw the correct pronunciation of admin, Amazon, Java, image, jpeg and so on in the picture, I found that I had been reading the wrong words…

You can click on the speaker icon next to the word, you can listen to the correct pronunciation, but the problem is that it will jump to a new page, you can not directly skip to the jump, and then someone in the Issue (Lovetingyuan) shared a website, according to this Github project, you can do not skip to listen to the word pronunciation, the url is as follows: The page is shown in the following figure

Lovetingyuan. Making. IO/Chinese – pro…

Of course, according to the source, this pronunciation is not always accurate, it relies on Google Translate, which provides the pronunciation, so it’s for reference only.

I did a search on Github to see if there was a way for programmers to learn English. I didn’t expect to find three “Star” projects on Github, at least thousands of them, and accidentally ate a meal of dog food.

1. English-level-up-tips-for-Chinese

First Github project, address:

Github.com/byoungd/Eng…

This is also the largest number of stars among the three projects, with 16,000 +.

This is why the author created this project — to help the goddess learn English efficiently, and sure enough programmers are motivated enough to change the world…

The author also gives the definition of English proficiency:

The advantages of this project are introduced:

And the advantages of multi-dimensional learning,

Several programming language beginner words, including JS, PHP, Swift, Python, Go, Java six languages, but I simply looked at the Python and Java word list, just give the word, but did not give the corresponding Chinese explanation….

Finally, the Gitbook address for online reading:

Byoungd. Gitbook. IO/English – Lev…

The directory is as follows:

So, so far, these parts have been completed:

  • How to learn, why to learn, what to do and what not to do
  • Words: the method of memorizing words, and recommended several word books, a called Anki memorizing words software
  • Listening part: Several misunderstandings of listening, listening and extensive listening, recommended listening materials, including introductory listening training, front-end related videos, Youtube videos, talk shows and so on
  • Medium, Quora, Reddit, Hacker News, and StackOverFlow are five websites that I think programmers should visit regularly. These include blogs, Q&A communities, and resource sites.
  • Speaking: Vowels and consonants, advice on how to practice speaking.

And finally, here’s the dog food

2. A-Programmers-Guide-to-English

An English study guide for programmers, v1.2

Github.com/yujiangshui…

Currently, the project also has 6000+ Star, as shown below:

The original intention of this project and the target population:

Online reading address:

a-programmers-guide-to-english.harryyu.me/

The directory is as follows:

The authors also give a brief introduction to how to learn English and suggest that you aim for ielts, TOEFL, or PTE. Here’s why:

On the one hand, this professional test tests your English ability in all aspects, which is more objective than other tests and can show your weaknesses. On the other hand, if you study or work abroad, it can also serve as a proof of your English ability. Of course, the disadvantage is that you have to prepare for the test, and then take the test for almost 2000 yuan.

The author himself chose the PTE test. Of course, from the perspective of feedback, this kind of test is more objective to reflect your learning results, but also more specific to quantify your English level (excluding the possibility of overplay).

In terms of learning methods, I also be more agree with the author says the use of English learning, rather than with the aid of translation study, which is a word of English learning, should not be translated into Chinese to learn, but should keep in mind the meaning in English, such as an example, the authors cite to cover the words, one of the English explanation is: To report the news about a particular imporant event: to report a particular imporant event But that doesn’t say that the word cover, as a report, means news of an important event.

Of course, it is difficult to learn English all of a sudden, so the author recommends a European dictionary, as a transition software;

In addition, for word memorization software, Anki is also introduced, which can help you memorize a custom piece of content with a more reasonable review cycle based on a famous Ebbinghaus forgetting curve.

As a writing aid, I recommend Grammarly, a Google plugin that can help you check for grammar problems.

Chrome.google.com/webstore/de…

The author also recommends other tools, English textbooks, etc.

Everyone can use English

This is a Github project that was launched in January of this year.

Github.com/xiaolai/eve…

Currently only 1800+ Star, then the catalog is as follows:

Compared to the previous two projects, there seems to be nothing too prominent, but what is particularly noteworthy is that the author of this project is Li Xiaolai, and the introduction on Wikipedia is as follows:

In other words, he is better known as an angel investor related to blockchain.

Of course, the first draft of the tutorial was actually completed in 2010, the web development version was made in 2015, and uploaded to Github this year.

Last month, he was even more famous for Posting a project on How to teach yourself Python on Github:

Github.com/selfteachin…

At present, there are about 8000 STARS, and the catalog is as follows:

If you are interested, you can also go and watch it.

summary

Programmers also need to learn English well so that they can easily read English documents and communicate well with foreign friends on StackOverflow and Github. Meanwhile, algorithm engineers need good English ability whether they are reading papers or publishing papers.

Finally, learn how to speak good English words yourself, but your colleagues and classmates may still mispronounce them, so click on them, or forward this article to them to correct their pronunciation! One joy is better than many!
