  • Update OpenJDK 11, MariaDB 10.3, and Apache 2.4.38
  • Update Chromium 73.0, Firefox 60.7
  • Improved UEFI support

In this article, we will demonstrate how to install the Debian 10 “Buster” Workstation on your laptop and desktop.

Debian 10 recommended system requirements:

  • 2 GB memory
  • 2 GHz dual-core processor
  • 10 GB of available hard disk space
  • Bootable installation media (USB/DVD)
  • Network Connection (optional)

Let’s jump to the Debian 10 installation steps.

Step: 1) Download the Debian 10 ISO file

Download the Debian 10 ISO file from its official portal,

After downloading the ISO file, burn it to USB or DVD to make it available for boot.

Step: 2) Use the installation boot media (USB/DVD) to boot your computer system

Reboot your Debian 10 installed computer, go to BIOS Settings, and set the boot media to USB or DVD. After booting the computer with bootable media, we should see the screen below.

Select the first option “Graphical Install”.

Steps: 3) Select your preferred language, location, and keyboard layout

In this step, you will be asked to choose your preferred language.

Click “Continue”.

Select your preferred location and the computer system will automatically set the time zone accordingly.

Now select the keyboard layout that is appropriate for your installed device.

Click “Continue” to Continue.

Step 4) Set the host name and domain name for Debian 10

Set the hostname that is appropriate for your environment, then click on “Continue”, in my case I specified the hostname as “Debian 10-Buster”.

Specify the appropriate domain name for your environment, install it, and then click on Continue.

Step 5) Specify the password of user root

Specify the root password on the screen below, and then click on Continue.

Step 6) Create a local user and its password

In this step, you will be prompted to specify local user details such as a full name, username, and password,

Click on Continue.

Click on “Continue” and specify the password in the following window.

Step 7) Select a disk partition scheme for Debian 10

In this step, select a hard disk partition scheme for Debian 10. In my case, I have 40 GB of hard disk available for the operating system installation. There are two types of partitioning schemes:

  • Wizard partitions (the installer will automatically create the required partitions)
  • Manual partitioning (as the name suggests, with this approach we can manually create a partitioning scheme)

In this tutorial, we will use the wizard partition with LVM on my 42 GB hard drive.

Click on “Continue” to Continue,

As we can see, I have approximately 42 GB of disk space, so select “Continue”.

On the next screen, you will be asked to select the partition, or the first option if you are a new Linux user. If you want a separate home partition, choose the second option, otherwise choose the third option, which creates separate partitions for /home, /var, and/TMP.

For my part, I will create separate partitions for /home, /var, and/TMP by choosing the third option.

On the next screen, select “Yes” to write the changes to disk, configure LVM, and then click on “Continue”.

In the next screen, the partition table is displayed to verify the partition size, file system type, and mount point.

Click on “Continue” to Continue,

On the next screen, select “Yes” to write changes to disk,

Click on “Continue” to Continue the installation,

Step 7) Debian 10 installation begins

In this step, the Debian 10 installation is already underway,

During installation, the installer will prompt you to scan the CD/DVD to configure the package manager, select “No”, and then click on “Continue”.

In the next screen, select “Yes” if you want to configure web-based package manager, but make sure your system is connected to the network for this to work, or select “No”.

Click on “Continue” to configure the package manager based on your local location, and in the next few screens you will be prompted to select the local and Debian package repository urls, and you will get the screen below.

Select “No” to skip the package review step, then click on “Continue”.

In the next window, you’ll be prompted to select the PC Desktop environment and other packages. In my case, I chose “Gnome Desktop”, “SSH Server” and “Standard System Utilities”.

Click on “Continue” to Continue the installation,

Select the option “Yes” to install the Grub boot loader.

Click on “Continue” to Continue, and then in the next window select the disk (/dev/sda) on which the boot loader will be installed.

Click on “Continue” to Continue the installation, and once the installation is complete, the installer will prompt us to restart the system,

Click on “Continue” to reboot your system, and don’t forget to change the boot media in the BIOS Settings so that the system boots from the hard disk on which we have Debian 10 operating system installed.

Step 8) Start your newly installed Debian 10 system

Once we reboot the system after a successful installation, we will get the following boot loader screen.

Select the first option “Debian GNU/Linux” and hit Enter.

Once the system starts, use the local user I created during installation and its password.

After a successful login, you will see the following computer desktop screen,

This confirms that Debian 10 has been successfully installed, and that’s all for this article. Explore this exciting Linux distribution and have fun 😊
