To find files, folders, apps, or disks more easily, you can create a surrogate for them and place the surrogate in an easy-to-find location. When you open the avatar, the original project opens.

Create a stand-in

On a Mac, perform the following operations:

  • Select the project, then choose File > Make a Double.
  • You can create as many avatars as you want for your project, and then drag them to another folder or desktop.
  • When you press the option-Command key, drag the original project to another folder or desktop to create a surrogate and move it in one step.

Add items to the Access sidebar or dock

The items you see in the Access sidebar and docking dock are stand-ins pointing to the original App, file, disk, or folder. For example, in the sidebar, Documents opens the Documents folder located in your personal folder. You can add your own projects to the sidebar or dock.

On a Mac, perform the following operations:

  • Add a folder, App, or disk to the Access sidebar: Drag the original item to the Personal Favorites section.
  • Add a file, folder, or App to the dock: Drag the original project to the dock.

Drag your App to the left of the dividing line separating the most recently used apps. Drag files and folders to the right of another separator separating recently used apps. If you move the dock to one side of the desktop, drag and drop the files and folders separating the bottom line and the App above.

Removes items from the Access sidebar or dock

On a Mac, perform the following operations:

  • Remove item from Visit sidebar: Drag item out of Visit sidebar until you see the Remove symbol
  • Remove stand-in from Dock: Drag the item out of dock until you see “Remove”.

If an item is removed from the sidebar or dock, its avatar is also removed. The original project is not removed from the Mac.

Find the original project of the project in the Access sidebar or dock

On a Mac, do either of the following:

  • In the sidebar: Hold down the Control key and click on the item in the sidebar, then select “Show in upper Folder”.
  • In Dock: Hold down the Control key and click on the project in dock, then choose “Options” > “Show in Access”.

Extension understanding: double

A stand-in is a shortcut to an App, file, or folder that you can place anywhere on your Mac. When creating a surrogate for an item, the original item does not move. When you open the avatar, the original project opens. If you move the original item or rename it, the link between the original item and the avatar remains.
