Why did I join InVision

I am pleased to announce that I have joined the InVision team, working on the Studio platform. Our goal is to create the most connected design ecosystem possible, enabling teams to navigate every stage of the design process from conception to development.

Evolution of design tools

Over the past few years, the role of the modern designer has evolved at an astonishing rate. I know this well. People who were once thought of as creating beautiful pixels have been transformed into people who apply research, create browsing experiences, add interaction design, and become leaders by speaking up for their company’s users.

As a result of this rapid transformation, a new set of responsibilities has been transferred to designers. Advances in technology require designers to design for a variety of content, devices, and languages. What was once a static pixel is now a dynamic unit that receives, grows, shrinks and animates. We now turn ideas into concepts, sketches, wireframes, screens, flows, prototypes, animations, code, and finally products.

Along with this evolution, design tools have evolved to support these specific requirements. These range from tools built specifically for creating screen designs and interactive prototypes to plug-ins that enable responsive document layouts, design delivery, and real-time collaboration.

It’s exciting to see such a diverse toolset emerge, but it also ultimately leads to designer uncertainty, and in many cases, design workflows are broken. 💔

Learn to be a designer

I switched from graphic designer to “product designer” four years ago. To be honest, I didn’t know what a product designer was. But it seems simple enough. Just draw a bunch of boxes, add text, align everything to the left, right?

Oh, I was wrong. Product design involves more than that. There are processes to follow, methods to implement, partners to work with and tools to use. Back then, there weren’t a lot of learning resources, and we saw the scarce Medium articles written by design leaders as a blessing. 🙏 🏽

In the process of this evolution, more and more resources are becoming available, making the path to becoming a product designer a little easier. Meng To’s Design+Code taught us how To use the necessary tools, and uxDesign.cc gave us an insight into user experience. I decided to join them and share what I learned along the way with other designers. I started hosting design workshops in the Bay Area and created a YouTube channel of tutorials.

In order to learn how to be a better product designer, I decided to teach others how to be a product designer. Sounds counterintuitive, right? But it makes sense. When you try to show something you force yourself to understand it so deeply that you can break it down and explain it.

Sharing what I’ve learned puts me in a fantastic community of creators. People are hungry for knowledge, driven by an incredible creativity, and they share what they learn openly. I’m lucky to be part of this incredible team.

My next step is to move from teaching people how to use design tools to joining a team that builds them.

Why InVision

According to Jim Collins, the journey of great companies does not begin with their goals or their approach, but with their teams. They started by getting people in the car who were willing to work several times as hard. There is no better example than InVision.

I’ve been in touch with people at InVision over the past few years, working on plug-ins, resources, and just being uncomfortable with the design and tools. While their professionalism and communication skills have always been excellent, the most striking thing I noticed about them was the people. I thought everyone I met was a perfect fit for their current role, and they were.

The team allowed InVision to grow quickly and remain stable. They have created some of the most popular Design tools such as Craft, Design System Manager, Design Better, Freehand, Inspect, and now Studio, a screen Design tool for modern designers. Joining such a great team will be a learning experience. I can’t wait to work side-by-side with some of the most talented designers and smart product people I admire the most. 🙌 🏽

Design tools for everyone

What if everything you need to create amazing experiences was in the same design ecosystem? Sounds like the Holy Grail, right? With the release of the Studio platform, this will happen soon. I’m joining a team that works with third parties to help them deliver high-quality experiences. We will help provide design assets and resources for top-level applications. We will reach out to the community to understand their needs and help them join our platform.

We are building a support team of engineers, designers and marketers for the platform. In addition, we’re topping up faith — the Design Forward Fund is making $5 million in grants and equity investments to people and companies that create world-class apps and add-ons for InVision Studio. I imagine a healthy ecosystem built and driven by a community of creators. If you have an idea for an application that can improve the design workflow within Studio, we’d love to hear about it! 📣

I am excited to join InVision as head of platform design. We invite you, creators, developers and entrepreneurs to join us to make that dream a reality — to build the design ecosystem of the future.

By the way, all animations in this article were created using Studio. You can download it here.
