Abstract: Cloud storage gateway supports industry-standard file and block storage protocols. It can cache frequently accessed data locally to provide low latency and high performance, allowing enterprises or individuals to securely store data in Ali Cloud OSS. The newly released “Performance File Gateway” and “Block Gateway” have been opened for public testing.
In order to help enterprises realize the seamless connection between offline local storage and storage space on the cloud, Ali Cloud launched the cloud storage gateway product in June last year. With OSS on Ali Cloud as back-end storage, IT can provide seamless and secure integration between the enterprise’s internal IT environment and cloud-based storage infrastructure.
Cloud storage gateways not only support industry-standard storage protocols, but also provide low latency performance by caching frequently accessed data locally, allowing enterprises or individuals to securely store data in ARI Cloud OSS. The cloud storage gateway supports both local DC deployment and cloud ECS deployment. Users can use the cloud storage gateway immediately without writing a line of code and enjoy the read and write experience of local disks and the cloud storage space.
Core functions of cloud storage gateway
Three gateways keep abreast of each other to bridge online and offline storage:
Currently, the cloud storage gateway provides three functions: Common file gateway, Performance file gateway, and Block gateway. The three functions are targeted at entry-level users, users with high performance and high compatibility requirements, and users who want to use the block storage protocol to access the cloud storage. The newly released “performance file Gateway” and “block Gateway” are now open for public testing. The following focuses on the interpretation of these two functions.
The performance file gateway is suitable for enterprise users who have high requirements on high performance and compatibility with enterprise storage features. The performance file gateway provides a file mapping relationship similar to that of the common file gateway. It also provides higher bandwidth and lower latency through the cache design of the local site. In particular, it improves the performance of reading and writing small files, and improves POSIX compatibility and third-party software compatibility.
Block gateway, for customers who want to access OSS storage space using block storage protocols. You can create storage volumes in OSS to provide iSCSI access for applications. Local applications can access these volumes as iSCSI targets. Block gateways provide two modes: write through mode and cache mode. Write through mode synchronizes block volume data slices to the cloud, which is suitable for high-speed link customers such as dedicated lines. Cache mode The local cache disk accelerates read and write, and the cached data is uploaded to the cloud asynchronously.
Five classic application scenarios help users accurately select applicable functions:
You can select a file gateway when the following three scenarios occur. 1. Set up a file storage service with large capacity when the local storage is limited. 2. When you need to store a large number of files in the cloud, but want the application to still access the files as a file system without changing the code. 3. When you need to access the same files in multiple data centers using the file storage service.
You can choose a block gateway when the following two scenarios occur. 1. If you need to use backup software to back up data to the cloud, the backup software supports efficient iSCSI transmission. 2. You need to import video stream data to a storage volume over iSCSI for cloud storage. The original link
