This year’s Android Developer Summit brought a lot of the latest news on Android’s big-screen device development, including a series of updates to Android 12L features on foldable devices and tablets: Optimized Android 12 features for larger devices, better developer tools, and a Google Play update for larger devices. Next, we’ll introduce you to three major updates for Android’s big-screen device development.
Android 12L feature update for larger screen devices
Android 12L makes Android 12 even better on larger screen devices, with a number of enhancements to notifications and lock screens. It also includes the following important things for developers:
- The new emphasis on multitasking means that all apps can now go into split-screen mode, whether they can be resized or not;
- Update and improve the compatible mode;
- The new Activity Embedding API lets you display multiple activities simultaneously, making it easier to build optimized layouts for large screen devices in existing applications.

Easier to build large-screen devices
Android continues to support larger screen devices, and now we’ve released several new tools to help you expand the app interface to accommodate larger screen devices.
- A new Material Design guide for large-screen device Design that includes definitions of layout patterns common in ecosystems to help inspire your application Design;
- Window Size Classes are a new type of breakpoint framework that represents most of the typical device scenarios in an ecosystem updating SlidingPaneLayout to support navigation;
- The new Compose API makes it easy to drive adaptive and responsive UIs, including support for navigation bars;
- Android Studio Reference Devices, a new set of device configuration files, represents the broadest range of device testing in the ecosystem;
- Layout Validation for Android Studio introduces a new visual Lint tool to detect Layout issues on large screen devices;
- A new resizable simulator that can quickly switch between reference devices.

Google Play updates for larger screen devices
To help users find the best apps for tablets, foldable devices, and ChromeOS devices, we’ve introduced some new changes on Google Play to recommend apps optimized for larger screen devices. This includes new checks to assess app quality so we can show apps optimized for larger screen devices and update search rankings to show the best apps for those devices. We’ve also introduced big-screen device-specific app Ratings that allow users to rate how well your app performs on their big-screen devices.
