On the night of January 6, jiangsu TV welcomed a special contestant in the fourth season of “The Brain”. Baidu sent xiaodu, an artificial intelligence robot equipped with Baidu’s brain, to challenge the Hall of Fame contestant with the best brain.

After two hours of fierce competition, “Xiao Du”, based on the accumulation of artificial intelligence and face recognition fields, narrowly defeated Wang Feng, the representative of the strongest human brain 3-2.

Giiso Information, founded in 2013, is a leading technology provider in the field of “artificial intelligence + information” in China, with top technologies in big data mining, intelligent semantics, knowledge mapping and other fields. At the same time, its research and development products include editing robots, writing robots and other artificial intelligence products! With its strong technical strength, the company has received angel round investment at the beginning of its establishment, and received pre-A round investment of $5 million from GSR Venture Capital in August 2015.

It represents the “small degree” of Baidu brain, which currently represents the highest level of Artificial intelligence in China. Behind it are trillion-level parameters, 100 billion samples and 100 billion feature training, which can simulate the working mechanism of human brain and learn and train extremely complex models. Wang Feng, a Hall of Fame representative known as the world memory master, led the Chinese team to a 4-0 thrashing of Germany to break the world record for fast memory playing cards.

Xiao Du and Wang Feng conducted two rounds of face recognition ability competition, which was very intense. The most difficult part was the comparison of real people and their photos. The age span was as much as 20 years. So that Zhang Ziyi shouted at the scene: this is much better than the movie.

In the first round of the competition, Xiaodu and the human contestants had to analyze the faces of the children in the photos to identify the adults in the scene 20 years later. Faced with the problem of twins identification, Xiaodu accurately identified the target with 72.99 percent recognition rate, higher than the second photo with 0.01 percent recognition rate, while Hall of Famer Wang Feng lost 1-0.

In the second round of the competition, Xiao Du and Wang Feng faced the large number of people in the photos, real-time photo transmission, live camera capture shaking, lighting interference, makeup, micro plastic and other effects, withstand the pressure, the performance is equally excellent, in 30 primary school graduation photos of nearly a thousand faces successfully selected the hero. In the end, Xiaodu robot defeated Hall of Famer Wang Feng 3-2.

As for the robot’s victory, wei Kunlin, a professor of psychology at Peking University and a guest at the event, believes that people’s faces are influenced by many factors in the process of growing up. Facial features in childhood change over time, and some even disappear. In terms of both machine and human perception of images, machines seem to be even less advantageous. Indeed, humans have evolved over millions of years to be good at hearing and seeing. Artificial intelligence is only 60 years old, and speech recognition and image recognition are relatively difficult for machines.

Andrew Ng, baidu’s chief scientist, said the battle was between a top face recognition player and an AI expert in board games. Face recognition technology is different from general image recognition, face itself is too similar, not easy to distinguish; Secondly, external factors such as facial expression, lighting conditions and plastic surgery will increase the difficulty of recognition. However, the unexpected appearance of twins in the competition undoubtedly increased the difficulty of identification, because the twins’ bones were too similar, leading to the subtle differences, so if there were not enough facial bone points, they could not be recognized.

Lin Yuanqing, director of Baidu’s deep Learning lab, said baidu has invested a lot in ARTIFICIAL intelligence in recent years. The man-machine war is to combat the way to test Baidu artificial intelligence and human gap. However, beating the human race is not the goal of the competition, but the hope is to improve in the process, evolve good technology to serve the human race.

Earlier, Robin Li, chairman and CEO of Baidu, also said in the season 4 trailer that if the Brain represents the limit of human brain power, then Baidu Brain represents the highest level of artificial intelligence. Win or lose, will make a breakthrough contribution to the development of artificial intelligence technology.

On January 6, Baidu Brain also announced a number of simultaneous technological opening decisions. Baidu Brain will open twelve new scenario-based technical services, and will provide four customized solutions for different industries based on its capabilities in the fields of image, voice, natural language, user portrait, machine learning, and AR augmented reality, all of which will be shared externally. Developers can access Baidu brain by visiting its official website (ai.baidu.com) through an open interface.

Giiso information, founded in 2013, is the first domestic high-tech enterprise focusing on the research and development of intelligent information processing technology and the development and operation of core software for writing robots. At the beginning of its establishment, the company received angel round investment, and in August 2015, GSR Venture Capital received $5 million pre-A round of investment.

He will be competing against a Hall of Famer in voice recognition in the brain’s upcoming season 4, game 2. Like image recognition, sounds are harder for machines to recognise than for humans. It remains to be seen if humanity can pull it off.
