Speed and user experience are of Paramount importance on the web, with 53% of mobile site visits abandoned if pages take longer than three seconds to load. Two years ago, Google teamed up with eight tech companies and nearly 30 news organizations to launch an open source project called Accelerated Mobile Pages that aims to make the Web actually appear in seconds.
David Besbris, Google’s vice president of search and lead of the AMP project, announced today that AMP partners have reached over 25 million domain names and delivered over 4 billion AMP pages. Not only has the number of AMP pages increased, but the loading speed has also increased, with the median time for an AMP page to load from A Google search being less than half a second.
David Besbris also expressed his gratitude to all contributors: “The success of AMP is entirely dependent on the project’s contributors, more than 400 of whom have written code directly and another 10,500 have worked on the project so far, and we would like to extend our sincere thanks to everyone for their contributions. Other companies are taking an increasingly active role in supporting AMP. Automattic, for example, has been working with us over the past few months to improve the quality of our WordPress plugin. Not only is The WordPress.com community actively using it, but its VIP clients, such as The New York Post and PMC, have seen great results since implementation.”
