Alpha, Beta, GM, OEM, LTS, etc
Common version number:
Alpha: An internal test version of software or system that is buggy and used only by insiders
Beta: a test release of software or system, usually after the Alpha release, with many new features and bugs
Gamma: Software or systems are close to a mature version that can be released with only minor improvements
Microsoft common version numbers:
RC (Release Candidate) : indicates the Candidate version. This version does not add new functions but requires debugging
GA (General Available) : Indicates an official release
RTM (Release to Manufacture) : A press version that is mass-produced by the factory. The content is the same as the official version
Original Device Manufacture (OEM) : device versions for computer manufacturers. They are not retailed but pre-installed
RVL: The official version, but RVL is not the name of the version at all. It is a cracked Chinese/English version of the document
EVAL: The EVAL version, which is circulated on the Web, is similar to the “evaluation Version” and has the same functionality as the retail version
RTL (Retail) : The Retail version is the real official version, the official launch of the Retail version
Version numbers commonly used by Apple:
GM (Gold Master) – The last beta before the official release
Common versions of Google Chrome:
Chromium: Open source version, extremely fast iteration, new version in hours, lots of new features, waiting for verification will be ported to Chrome
Canary: A bit slower to iterate than the Chromium version, very new but unproven features, and very high crash probability
Dev: Based on Chromium, new features are coming out every week, with some filters and Bug fixes and instabilities
Beta: Based on the Dev release, Chrome will be improved based on this release, which is generally updated monthly with improved features
Stable: The official release of Chrome, which is based on a Beta, with known bugs fixed and generally slow updates
Common Ubuntu version numbers:
Long Term Support (LTS) : Long Term Evolution (LTS). Ubuntu supports this version for a longer time.
