1. Introduce yourself briefly

Hello, friends of GIAC, my name is Zhou Jing and my flower name is Zhixian. Currently, I am in the original team of AliCloud Edge Cloud, responsible for the construction and landing of the platform of Edge Cloud container. Over the years, I have been engaged in high availability, high concurrency, servitization, ServiceMesh, resource cloud, service container, cloud native and other related work of back-end system architecture. I am an old man of back-end development.

In 2011, I founded the entrepreneurial technology community “IDEV Entrepreneur Technology Salon” together with the leader of Kaixin001. It was not called Meetup at that time, so my network ID was always iDevz. For the first time, I came into contact with high availability and large concurrency. I also got to know many big names in the industry and had a lot of opportunities to learn and improve myself.

In 2012, I got to know OpenRESTY in a process of architecture selection, and I really practiced large concurrency in my work. In the following years, I have done a lot of things around OpenRESTY, and witnessed and participated in the early construction and development process of the OpenRESTY community, which made me feel the power of the community for the first time. When I first went to Sina in 2012, I played with Lua by myself every day. In order to push people into Lua stack, I also developed an OpenRESTY framework similar to PHP Yaf (the representative work of Bird’s brother), and finally successfully promoted the large-scale architecture upgrade of Sina Mobile for many times.

In 2016, I transferred to Weibo internally and took charge of the construction and implementation of the cross-language service of Weibo. At that time, it was not called Mesh. When we started, there was no ready Mesh solution, Linkerd was just started, and it was not known.

In 2017, the integration of the cross-language service system of Weibo opened the road of Weibomesh open source construction and landing. Later, because I understand that cloud computing has greatly crushed the living space of traditional back-end architects, the technologies that I am crazy about, such as high availability, large concurrency and service-oriented, are very mature and have been productized by cloud manufacturers. However, considering my own interests, I simply go to cloud manufacturers to continue my lead.

Therefore, I decided to come to Aliyun in 2020 and chose the direction that I think is the most promising. I mainly consider two points and hope to dig deeper in a field and do something more meaningful in the future. On the other hand, I think edge computing is a strategic technology that can really affect industry and industry compared with traditional consumer Internet, and it is also the technology that I know is most likely to subvert and change people’s production and life.

  1. Talk about a project you’ve been working on in the last year. What was the technical value of it? What is the state of the industry? Can you describe the technical highlights and challenges of your project?

I came to Aliyun Edge Cloud just over a year ago. During this period, I have been designing and constructing Aliyun Edge Cloud Container Platform, and promoting the integration of CDN and Edge Computing as well as the implementation of CDN on ENS project.

Since last year, especially this year, there has been a significant increase in the heat of 5G edge computing. Edge computing is also more and more contacted by people. However, it is also clear to all that the coverage and commercial scale of 5G is not yet up, and there are not many application cases. However, no matter from the perspective of national planning or social development, marginal computing is recognized as the core strategic direction.

As far as I know, Ali has two core advantages. One is that Ali Cloud has started to build the base of Feitar Edge operating system from the IaaS level since 2016 and explored various possibilities of Edge Computing. In addition, Ali has accumulated profound technologies and resources with more than ten years’ accumulation of CDN. And Ali Cloud is the only one I know that really achieves the integration of CDN and edge computing. In addition, Alibaba economy has a huge business ecology. We have a variety of super-large scale marginal business scenarios, through which we can build and polish our marginal cloud platform.

As I understand it, edge cloud is a distributed cloud that can be controlled remotely, secure and reliable, and easy to use with standards and is composed of a large number of edge nodes that are geographically dispersed. My main work is to cloud the resources of the all-area edge nodes based on the basic resource base of AliCloud edge cloud, and to build the original basic platform of IPAAS edge cloud with multi-rent isolation based on the cloud-based base of distributed multi-cloud heterogeneous fusion. Support CDN products and services, cloud communication, view computing, cloud games, cloud desktop, cloud intelligent terminal and other scenarios.

There are a few interesting and challenging points here. For example, how to abstract the heterogeneous and distributed cloud at various levels through a unified base plane? How to provide users with reliable and abundant edge cloud native services under the constraints of edge single node resources and network? And most importantly, how do you ensure that the overall architectural design that meets all these requirements is fundamentally evolutionary and iterative? The series of problems faced by the edge are all caused by the wide coverage, miniaturization, complex network environment, diverse resource network and other characteristics of the edge cloud node resources. The heterogeneity of edge resources, the unreliability of edge cloud and edge network and other factors lead to the two core technology issues of edge cloud: Integration and collaboration will always run through the whole process of our platform construction. In order to solve these series of core edge issues, we designed and built Ali Cloud Edge Cloud Computing Platform.

  1. What are some of the issues that you typically focus on when you’re putting a technical solution to the ground? How to ensure the smooth implementation of technical solutions?

Before a technical solution to promote must ensure that the system design is based on a deep understanding of business, for the details of the status quo of touch panel, the overall scheme have short term plans, the beginning of the system design point and make careful think about possible problems related to the extension point of design, and related supporting, stability and observability) rely on carding, form a complete set of construction in the process of advancing also cannot little. These are the premise of efficient and high-quality implementation of technical solutions.

I understand that the implementation process of technical solutions is more of a process of gradual verification and focus of solutions. The unobstructed progress information and phased review are particularly important. Personally, I think a good solution and system must not be designed. Architect based on business (demand), the present situation, the allocation of resources, environment topology) and future (short medium and long term development plan) give a clever and extensible architecture is the basis of the scheme fall to the ground, the stability of the system security and practical ground rhythm is the key to ensure smooth implementation technology solutions, long-term communication and checking mechanism in the process, Regularly help all parties to identify their own positions, find out the current problems of the system and solve them accordingly, so as to promote the overall promotion into a virtuous circle, and the smooth implementation will become a natural. But there are many difficulties along the way, especially in the design and implementation of the mechanism.   1. What are some of the challenges that architects face in the recent wave of technological change? How to address these challenges?

My initial career choice to become a back-end architect was based on the idea that a back-end architect would just need to learn the business and dig deep into the technology. That’s one of the simplest expectations of a developer. I hope I can solve all kinds of interesting technical problems with machines and code every day without distractions.

But this is clearly not the case. Especially during my recent job change, I considered starting a business together with my friends. At the beginning, I also participated in various matters of early-stage venture capital investment. During the whole process of looking for money, I gradually understood the logic behind the pursuit of profit by capital. To sum up, any organization and individual should be clear about their core values, what values they have created for the society and what pain points they have solved. For example, Deppon Logistics must be the core of its entire logistics business, and IT facilities are only its auxiliary management tools. The core value of Sina News is to provide users with more real-time and multi-facet advisory services. As for where these services are running, as long as they are stable and reliable, they should all meet the business needs.

I’m glad I years always focus on the backend architecture in this direction, from the monomer was applied to micro service architecture, from the physical machine, more room for deploying the physical architecture to distributed cloud cloud native architecture, cloudy resources from the RPC to witness ServiceMesh etc and depth of service involved in all kinds of architecture, the transformation of technology, during the process of iteration. As far as I am concerned, there are two reasons behind such a series of technological changes. One is that capital drives organizations to pursue cost reduction and efficiency improvement, and the other is that the social division of labor is getting more and more detailed. All this is a natural choice.

In this context, I think the most important points for architects are as follows: First, abandon technology idealism and always understand that all technology serves the business, technology serves the business, and business serves the business; One is in the current cloud computing, cloud native technology popularization, under the tide of pratt &whitney and to keep pace with The Times, based on the deep thinking of the core value of your own organization, clarify the technical construction of whether organizational core competence, timely switch, based on cloud computing, cloud native, or a hybrid cloud is the best path to design your own architecture, by good architecture design in order to save operating costs, Improve the efficiency of service maintenance. One is to maintain a keen sense of smell of technology, and continue to learn, only by constantly refreshing their own knowledge system, find their own positioning, in order to better realize their own value.

  1. In the process of technology selection, what questions do you often consider?

I think the most core point is the understanding of the business, demand mining and current situation sorting. This is the premise of technology selection. What is the nature of the problem I want to solve before selection? The other thing is what is the abstract model of the technology or the solution that I’m trying to solve for the essential problem? What capabilities does the current solution have? How does it help us solve our problems? What are the possible side effects of the introduction of the corresponding solution and technology? Are there easy solutions? What is the cost of introduction? Is the conclusion of the overall selection guaranteed to be relatively simple, maintainable, scalable, and iterative? Is the stability ability easy to guarantee?

  1. Which project or technology are you bullish on in the cloud native space, and why?

I engaged in the field of edge cloud native itself, although the edge of cloud native is using cloud native concept on the edge of the edge of cloud build native technology infrastructure and ecological industry, it is more than just a cloud native, but a lot of technologies are interlinked, and a lot of technology we are also willing to try even to the edge of reuse, So it seems to me that there are just too many high-value projects and technologies in the cloud native space.

If I have to talk about what I think is the most important, first of all, I think it should focus on what core problems does this project or technology solve? Did it solve some of the pain points in my scene? Do these issues have or are likely to have a profound impact on the cloud native system as a whole?

For example, when we are making the edge cloud container platform, considering that we need to provide multi-rent isolated K8S service for tenants, and at the same time, we need to manage the whole network at the same time. Currently, there are thousands of IDC devices with many W sets, so a single K8S cluster must be impossible. The VirtualCluster project has given us a lot of ideas for large-scale and multi-tenant K8s, which I understand to be the best practice for current multi-cluster management. Another example is OpenYurt, which solves a series of problems encountered by K8S in the production process of edge environment, such as off-network autonomy, such as unit management and so on. All these technologies have been productized in Aliyun for external services. I think being selected and productized by the cloud manufacturer itself is the biggest recognition of this project or technology, because the process of productization requires the cloud manufacturer to invest a lot of research and maintenance costs, and no organization will pay for something of no value.

  1. Please talk about some of the technology hot spots that you have been paying attention to recently, and tell us your opinion about these technology hot spots

Recently, I have been paying more attention to DDD, WebAssembly and DAPR. DDD domain driven design may be a powerful framework and methodology support for the real large-scale implementation of edge computing in the industry and industry in the future. Although with the continuous completion of informatization, digital upgrade and further development on the road of intelligence in the industry and industry, DDD domain driven design may be a powerful framework and methodology support for the real large-scale implementation of edge computing in the industry and industry. However, the contradiction between the professional and vertical technical knowledge of the domain and the iterative evolution of IT infrastructure gradually becomes prominent. DDD provides domain experts and IT technical experts with more explicit and specific communication primitives, framework support.

WebAssembly + DAPR is supposed to be the next generation of cloud-native runtimes, and I’m a big believer in that. A cross-language, portable, lightweight, high-performance, security-isolated runtime will provide powerful runtime support for a variety of edge heterogeneous scenarios.

  1. Please introduce the topic of your speech at GIAC this time or the topic you are responsible for

I am very glad to be invited to attend this GIAC as the producer of the special session on edge computing, because 5G edge computing is still in the early stage of preliminary implementation. One of my main starting points in the topic selection is that I hope to invite guests from different sectors from their respective positions (fields). Comprehend the current development status of 5G edge computing and the overall situation of its implementation from different perspectives.
