Star is GitHub’s universal currency.
Each warehouse is trying to get more stars. More stars mean more people like the warehouse and think the warehouse can help them, thus making the warehouse more popular.
Recently, Qovery company encountered a big speechless event, a warehouse of the company with more than 3800 stars, suddenly lost all the stars and folk
Qovery is an Internet company that helps people deploy their apps to various cloud platforms.
They have a public repository on GitHub called Qovery/ Engine, which gained over 3800 stars and many folk during their long promotion.
One day, one of the engineers on their team accidentally submitted an API key to the repository and pushed it to the GitHub repository, a dangerous move that amounted to leaking private company data.
Fortunately, they have integrated a service called GitGuardian, which scans the files in the warehouse and sends an alarm when it detects that data such as passwords and keys have been pushed to the warehouse.
When the team received the alarm, they decided to immediately change the status of the repository from public to private to prevent the key from being seen by more people.
After it became private, they began to modify and clean up the GitHub repository commit history to address the issue of leaked API keys.
Once that was done, they changed the status of the warehouse from private to public.
Suddenly, they realized!
All the stars and folk are gone!
They immediately tried to contact the GitHub Support team, but GitHub said there was nothing they could do, because when you turn a public repository into a private repository, you lose all your stars and folk
Now they’re doing an Internet search, hoping to find someone who knows someone who works at GitHub and see if they can help them.
And offered a bottle of French wine to anyone who could help find someone working at GitHub.
In addition, I hope that after you see this, you can give them a star for the warehouse with 0 star.
Now I have a look, this warehouse has 589 stars (including one of mine)
