Too soon, the four-year undergraduate period is coming to an end, and there are still so many things worth learning and sharing in the final semester of the graduation project

I will share with you some of my experiences and materials in this warehouse, and I will also sort out my whole project here for your reference

  1. About the process and time allocation of graduation project

Select supervisor/topic/topic -> Task book -> opening report -> mid-term examination (defense will be selected) -> graduation thesis -> graduation defense -> foreign literature translation and other final work -> submit graduation kit 🎉

Everyone’s topic and situation are different, personally speaking:

  • A general understanding of the direction in one month (Graduate Laboratory Group)
  • The topic was opened in one month (the school was relatively relaxed and only did research work)
  • One-and-a-half month experiment
  • Half a month to write the paper, typesetting
  • One week to prepare for the defense
  • A week to tie up the loose ends
  1. About the topic

My graduation project is the general direction given by my graduate supervisor. Besides, some teachers from the School of Civil Engineering contacted me and wanted to do interdisciplinary work. Finally, I decided the topic by myself. In most cases, you have to choose from a list of topics given by faculty members.

I want to emphasize a few things about the topic:

  • Choose a tutor: If you are going to work on a project with a graduate tutor, choose a teacher from our school who you have loved before. If you want to have a relaxing graduation season, ask your seniors to choose a tutor who doesn’t push, who can learn a lot, who has the opportunity to do a lot of chores, etc. I believe that you have a lot of unique ideas in your mind by the senior year, but I still want to remind you to think clearly about this matter
  • Topic you are interested in/good at/Subject you want to do: Remember that upperclassman said that “graduation project may be the last time you can do what you want to do”, but also remember to balance your time and energy, “what direction do you want to go” the question can not be asked too many times. Did you see that? I’m not going to give you a definitive answer, but I’m going to ask you this question, and it’s important to think about it before you start planning your final project
  • Determination of the topic: You can modify the topic of the thesis before submitting the proposal report. If the graduate supervisor does not specify the topic clearly but only gives a general direction (like me), you can first formulate and improve your ideas during the first stage of research, and finally determine a topic
  1. About paper illustration making

Because my graduation project is biased towards research and experiment, which is not a classic engineering project, it should be used appropriately

It is recommended to use PPT to make diagrams directly, which is not only easy to use and standard, but also can be exported to PDF format and inserted into the document without damage. It can also adapt to PPT best in defense (after all, it is better to write well than to write well).

It is highly recommended that you have your own color and style for illustration making. Meanwhile, please note that this is a paper rather than an art exhibition. For details on scientific drawing, you can find them on the Internet

Just show me a few pictures that I made in powerpoint, and I’m sure you’ll have a better presentation

The results of your research should also be presented in the form of graphs and charts in your thesis and defense. After all, a picture is worth a thousand words. I only show a small part of my experimental results here

The UML diagrams of the project are recommended for draw. IO, ProcessOn, StarUML; Figma and ink knife are recommended for prototype drawings

  1. About Paper Typesetting

Compared with standard LaTeX, I still recommend word (word not WPS) for Chinese students. Most importantly, although there are Tongji LaTeX templates, some details are still difficult to handle with LaTeX. After all, flexibility is still a problem for the large typesetting system

Personally, I first wrote markdown in Typora, which is very convenient for formula, table and title. Finally, I conducted unified typesetting. When typesetting, I first copied the full text of the editable Word template (otherwise I could not edit the formula), and then removed all the text boxes inside. ⌘ CMD + ⇧shift + C/V to copy and paste styles (which is the format brush shortcut, but can paste a style many, many times). Note the following formatting aspects:

  • Title and body: First brush the title (bold, Times New Roman) and body (Times New Roman, Times New Roman). Note that the ABC “title” format is bold. This step can handle the font, word size, line spacing, alignment, indentation, etc
  • Table: three sections, which can be modified directly in the template (❗️ table title at the top)
  • Image: After insertion, set it to “top and bottom surround”, then center align, leave a blank line on top and bottom (❗️ title below) ⚠️ pay special attention to the Chinese and English font of the chart title!! (Caught out by the tutor’s piercing eyes)
  • Directory: “Update domain” after all selection, don’t forget to change the Chinese and English fonts again
  • Reference corner: brush the small corner referenced in the text, such as [1] to the top right zoom (do not force hyperlink jump)
  • The formula: Formulas also have font requirements. The formula exported directly from Typora has the same format as the formula inserted directly into Word, but this format cannot be changed on a MAC. The solution is to find a Windows computer and type the formula again using MathType (with support for copying and LaTex input). The resulting formula is perfectly compatible on the MAC but you can’t change it; You need to have a label on the right side of the formula, so mathType can be easily inserted, if you haven’t changed the mathType format, you can just type it on the right side of the formula#(x.x)After entering, you can mark on the right side (the formula should not be forced to change to standard font, there is no big problem if your roommate did not change)
  • Reference: The document format in the reference template is half dead, or the most convenient way of automation: Chinese literature is directly exported on CNK.COM, English literature is exported on Google Academic, the format is GB/T 7714 format
  1. About rechecking

From the beginning of this year, our undergraduate papers also need to be checked, and the index is below 25% of the R value of China National Knowledge Network. Believe me, as long as you write every word by yourself, there is no problem for our major without large-scale complete transfer

After the final draft recommended in wanfangzhong check once (graduates free of charge, but to wait for two hours), after checking there will be a complete report, reference this can again reduce your check ratio, and then according to the requirements of the school in the online check effect will be much better

Personally, I think the results of the two are similar. According to the online information before, there is no need to worry about the difference of the included libraries. In addition, you can also spend some money to check in VIP or PaperPass to relax your mind

  • Use common expressions such as: author, article, this thesis, etc
  • If your tutor is very busy, ask him/her to revise the abstract and the English abstract
  • If possible, start your project early
  • The final project, especially the paper, is more about showing your results than your process, and it is good to distinguish from the previous lab report to have a high-quality paper (advice from my excellent senior).
  • During the experiment, I sorted out more notes and ideas. When I started to write the paper, I decided the catalogue first, and then filled in the contents sorted out before
  • ‼ ️ Must be academic integrity, must be academic integrity, must be academic integrity (repeatedly)
  • It is not necessary to make earth-shattering methods. You can find methods in Github. The teacher also knows that you cannot start from scratch, but you must try and experiment by yourself to fully understand and digest the knowledge into your own
