C language is a general purpose computer programming language, widely used. C was designed to provide a programming language that could compile in an easy way, handle low-level memory, produce small amounts of machine code, and run without any runtime environment support.
Although C language provides a lot of low-level processing functions, it still maintains a good cross-platform characteristics. The C language program written with a standard specification can be compiled on many computer platforms, even including some embedded processors (microcontroller or MCU) and supercomputers and other operating platforms.
In the 1980s, in order to avoid differences in the syntax of C language used by various developers, the National Bureau of Standards of the United States formulated a complete set of international standard syntax for C language, called ANSI C, as the original standard of C language.
The development history
The C language continued to develop. In 1982, many visionary people and the American National Standards Institute decided to set up the C standard Committee to establish the C language standard in order to ensure the healthy development of the language. The committee consists of hardware manufacturers, compilers and other software tool makers, software designers, consultants, academics, C language authors, and application programmers. In 1989 ANSI published the first full C language standard, ANSI X3.159-1989, or “C89” for short, though it is also commonly referred to as “ANSI C”. C89 in 1990 by the International standard Organization ISO(International Organization for Standardization) verbatim to adopt, ISO official name for: ISO/IEC9899, so ISO/IEC9899: 1990 is also commonly referred to simply as “C90”. In 1999, after making some necessary revisions and improvements, ISO issued a new C language standard, named ISO/IEC 9899:1999, referred to as “C99”. In December 8, 2011, ISO and formally released a new standard, known as ISO/ IEC9899:2011, referred to as “C11”.
